Introduzione

For this work, I was tasked to write a response to the film Notte Prima degli Esami, which our class watched together. We viewed the film in Italian, with Italian subtitles. Our guidelines for the assignment were to watch the first two acts of the film and then predict what will happen in the final act. I thought this was an incredibly interesting assignment, and in all honesty, made me incredibly proud of myself for how far my Italian learning has come. I was able to understand the vast majority of the film and picked up on most of the humor and nuance of the film. Then, I was able to craft a solid response based upon my own thoughts. Overall, I greatly enjoyed the film, and I loved seeing the city of my study abroad represented on the big screen.

About Me

About me (2)

This was a response that I wrote my second day of my study abroad semester in Rome. After writing my final paper for the class, I thought it was exciting to look back upon my first work and see the way that my Italian composition skills have greatly developed. Even though I had taken many advanced classes at this point, and had studied abroad before, this shows my timidness and rusty language skills after not speaking or writing for a whole Summer. After becoming more confident in myself and practicing more, I can confidently say that my skills progressed exponentially from this point.

Come sarà l’America tra Cinque Anni?

Come sarà L’America tra Cinque Anni_

This was an interesting response that I wrote to the question, “How will America look in 5 years?” We had a discussion surrounding the way way that Italy has changed over the course of the last 5 years, and how we think it will continue to change, so our homework was to apply the same line of thinking to our home country. It was certainly interesting to think about the way America will change, especially shorty after having the conversation about Italy, and I believe this tuned my political and philosophical writing and speaking skills. It was also incredibly interesting to interface with the professor, students from Duke, students from Temple, and a girl in our class who grew up in Florence, while understanding how individual perspectives have changed in the last 5 years, and how people feel anxious or excited for the next 5 years to come.

Quando Ho Avuto Dieci Anni

Quando ho avuto dieci anni (1)

This work was assigned to us following a classroom discussion surrounding the way we interact with our families. We then thought about how we have changed as we have grow, so we wrote about ourselves 10 years ago. This was a good exercise to practice past tense writing, and it was also fun to think about how much my life has changed in the last ten years. We then presented our work to the class, and had a conversation regarding how we have changed in similar ways to other people in the class. I have always had trouble with writing about the past, so this was certainly a beneficial exercise for me to work on a weakness in my Italian knowledge.

Uomini

Uomini (1)

This assignment followed a classroom discussion, where we read a tabloid article about the stereotypes for men and women in Italy. For our response, we were supposed to write a satirical supplement to this article, and then read it in class. I found this to be a new and interesting exercise, that expanded upon written and speaking skills for my Italian. It also confirmed a lesson that Prof. Fellin once told our Italian 303 class: don’t joke in a language that is not your native language. It was very difficult for me to get a grasp on what is funny in Italian, with my humor being so heavily skewed towards America. This assignment was definitely useful, both as an Italian exercise, and as a learning experience.

Riserva Naturale di Monte Mario

Riserva Naturale di Monte Mario

This presentation centered around an activity that I had to do outside of the classroom, in the city of Rome. I chose to go on a run up to the large natural reserve in Lazio: Riserva Naturale di Monte Mario. This Reserve is atop a steep hill, and I had to learn a lot about the rules of pedestrians running on the road very quickly. The instructions for the assignment were to visit an area of Rome that you had not seen before, and then make a 15 minute presentation to the class about your experience. I greatly enjoyed it, because I struck out on my own and made some interesting observations about an area I had never experienced, took in some wonderful views, and even spoke to some people walking their dogs in the nature reserve. It was a good exercise for presentational skills in Italian, when I returned to class and recounted my time at the nature reserve.

Final Paper

Final Paper (1)

This paper, which accompanied an in-class presentation, was the final work that I completed for my Italian Conversations and Composition class. I chose to write my paper on the Italian Partisan movement during World War II. I have always been fascinated by the partisan movement, and the way that it ultimately influenced the drafting of the Italian Constitution in 1948. After having done some research on this subject while at Duke, I furthered my education in this subject by visiting a number of important historical sights for this very important historical movement in Italy. For this paper, I used my composition skills to give a history of the movement, discuss the culture around the movement, and draw some conclusions based on my research. Like my first assignment, this assignment is one that I enjoy revisiting, because it shows how my vocabulary, grammar, and creativity progressed throughout my time in Rome.

I Partigiani Italiani

I Partigiani Italiani

This presentation was made to accompany my final paper on the Italian Partisan movement. For this presentation, I wanted to include some information that differs from my paper, in order to keep the presentation exciting for the viewers. I spoke for 25 minutes on the partisan movement and I specifically elaborated on some of the stories surrounding heroic acts during the war. I really enjoyed this assignment, because it was a way for me to practice my formal speaking skills, while adding creative elements to a topic that I am deeply passionate about. Again, this was also at the end of my semester, so it was very exciting to give a 25 minute presentation and think about how far my speaking skills had come since starting my class four months prior.

Pittsburgh Bar

This image captures a very cool personal moment for me in Rome. One evening, my friends and I were walking near Piazza Navona, and saw a sign that said, “You’re in Steeler Country.” Being from Pittsburgh, I was immediately excited about this bar. I went inside and started to speak with the bartender, who was from Rome, but was a big fan of the city of Pittsburgh, even though he had never been there. I got my picture taken in front of this sign, which is for a famous theme park in Pittsburgh. It was so interesting to me that I could go to Rome and have a conversation in Italian, which centered completely around my hometown so far away. It was a great night for me to practice my conversational skills, because I spoke with the bartender for nearly 15 minutes, telling him stories about Pittsburgh, and listening to his fascination with the city.
