Political Economy

Political Economy examines the reciprocal relationships between politics and markets, both within and among countries, using a variety of analytical tools, including those of economics. Its concerns include interactions among economic and political development; cooperation and conflict among nations, groups, and individuals; the distribution of material resources and political power; the effects of political actors and institutions on economic outcomes; the causes and consequences of technological and structural change, growth, and globalization; and regulation.

“What is the optimal level of intervention of the state and how do we think about various forms of intervention to correct inequalities, should we think those inequalities need to be corrected.  On these two points, you have two excellent courses this fall, one taught by Professor Kuran on the political performance of civilizations and a series of courses by Professors Munger and Salsman on introduction to political economy.”

Political economy, in addition to its substantive scope is also a way of thinking about the world that borrows from both economics and political science.  From economics, it borrows a more sophisticated set of analytical techniques and Professor’s Niou’s class on institutions and self-governance or Professor Siegels class on experimental methods are examples of how we think about teaching those skills.”

Political economy also borrows a clearer and sharper understanding of the way institutions work and builds it into the analysis of economic and social phenomena, and this is, for instance, what the class of Professor Fresh’s economic, political, and social institutions will do.”
