Duke PMCoP: Managing through Challenging Conditions

Duke PMCoP: Managing through Challenging Conditions

October 15, 2024

With the conflicts overseas, the devastation incurred by hurricanes, and the upcoming election, each person attending this program is or will be managing their own and/or others’ emotions that can affect their work environment. These worldly events are different than our own, personal problems that we must self-manage. None of these events are within any one person’s control, yet they can exacerbate challenges that people are already experiencing with everyday life. Let’s be honest; even coping with your reaction to any one of these events can be challenging, and then add everyday stressors on top, and you might find yourself overwhelmed. So, what can we do NOW to prepare ourselves for these challenging circumstances? While we can - and should - hope for the best and try to stay positive, there are techniques we can use when managing ourselves and others through difficult conditions. This presentation reviews some tried and true soft skills to practice and share to promote stability, recognize needs, and help individuals emerge as leaders. The presentation in no way will provide all the answers; rather the intent is to deliver some practiced methods. The speaker will also review additional skills often used in professional coaching that might help guide conversations.

Regardless if your role is a project manager, program manager, supervisor, team leader, or a contributing team member, this presentation hopes to furnish each attendee with at least one soft skill management tip that can be used within their work environment that might help themselves and/or their team.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review some soft skills pertaining to managing people under difficult circumstances that are not under a manager's control.
  • Discuss small gestures that can have big impacts.
  • Provide tips for redirecting emotion into action.
  • Deliver guidance for being present when listening.
