The Department of Pediatrics congratulates the inaugural recipients of the Duke Pediatric Research Scholars (DPRS) Resident and Fellow Research Awards. Through this competitive program, residents and fellows with a strong commitment to pursuing physician-scientist careers receive funding to support their research projects.
This year, two residents (Drs. Bora Candir and Stefanie Kong) and three fellows (Drs. Seher Tekeli, John Barber, and Elizabeth Haxton) were selected for this prestigious award.
Awardees will conduct the following research projects under the guidance of their faculty mentors:
- Bora Candir, PGY3 Resident: Dr. Candir, mentored by Dr. Pinar Gumus Balikciouglu, will study the lipidomic profiling of physical activity and metabolic outcomes in children with type 1 diabetes.
- Stefanie Kong, PGY2 Resident: Dr. Kong, under the mentorship of Dr. Gregory Flemming, will examine the impact of pulmonary artery internal flow restrictor placement on pulmonary artery growth and hemodynamic stability in neonates with single-ventricle physiology.
- Seher Tekeli, Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Fellow: Dr. Tekeli, under the mentorship of Dr. Jason Lang, will work to improve the detection of small airways dysfunction in children with asthma.
- John Barber, Allergy and Immunology Fellow: Under the mentorship of Dr. Garnett Kelsoe, Dr. Barber will investigate the molecular mechanisms of allergic memory.
- Elizabeth Haxton, Hematology-Oncology Fellow: Mentored by Dr. Jennifer Rothman, Dr. Haxton will study outcomes among pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients with the Duffy null phenotype.
