The Duke University School of Medicine New Direction and Delayed Funding Program provides strategic, short-term support to faculty facing funding gaps due to delays in federal awards or early termination stemming from shifting federal research priorities. The goal is to maintain research continuity, retain personnel, and support faculty in navigating temporary setbacks or repositioning their work in response to changes in the external funding landscape. This targeted investment prioritizes NIH-funded investigators, with strong funding histories, to sustain high-impact, competitive research programs.
There are four categories of funding opportunities:
- Continued Spending Authority: Short-term support for projects with delayed non-competing renewals or no-cost extensions.
- Delayed Funding Bridge Awards: Temporary funding for PIs awaiting likely fundable competing renewals delayed by factors such as timing of council review or Notice of Award receipt.
- New Direction Awards: Support for investigators whose grants were not renewed or terminated due to shifts in federal priorities, enabling pursuit of new research directions.
- Wind Down Support: Funding to complete critical final work (such as experiments, data analysis, or publications) on projects that cannot continue but require completion of key outputs.
