Chinese New Year Holiday in 2019 was February 5th. The color red is everywhere, and the holiday has many symbols of money and prosperity. 2019 is the year of the pig, and the folklore of the pig symbol is wealth also!
As we are a multi-cultural group, our PhD students like to explore and celebrate each other’s holidays and traditions. Yuanfan Yang hosted the Chinese New Year celebration this year and it was Yum, Fun, and yes, Educational! Tina Chen shared with us a children’s story of how the Zodiac animals were chosen. (For everything you would ever want to know about the zodiac, go here (https://chinesenewyear.net/zodiac/). We also learned that dumplings are in the shape of ancient ingots called yuanbao and therefore are also a symbol of prosperity like the lanterns in the photo below. (For more on that, read here- https://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/Chinese_Customs/yuanbao.htm)
