Corey Simon, DPT, PhD has joined the Duke School of Medicine as an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Doctor of Physical Therapy Division.  As a pain and aging researcher, Dr. Simon is committed to maintaining physical function and quality of life among older adults suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions.  Currently, he is developing geriatric real-time physical performance measures of movement-evoked pain, which represent activity-related pain experienced in the home and community. Dr. Simon is also investigating chronic pain phenotypes among older adults with the goal of streamlining clinical assessment and treatment. 

Corey completed his doctorate in physical therapy at University at Buffalo in 2004 and practiced clinically until 2010, with specializations in outpatient orthopaedics and industrial rehabilitation.  Corey served as clinical director of an outpatient physical and occupational therapy facility for 2 years, and held multiple professional governance positions at local, state, and national levels.  Corey completed a PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Florida (UF) in 2014, and a post-doctoral fellowship at the UF Pain Research and Intervention Center of Excellence in 2016.

Corey is married to Maria Simon, an RN at Duke Women’s Health. They have two daughters, Kennedy (age 10) who plays competitive youth soccer and Jayden (age 8) who loves gymnastics and volleyball.  After stops in New York, Ohio, and Florida, the Simons are happy to finally call North Carolina home.  They’re also excited to wear the right color blue and be active members of the Duke community for years to come.
