The Perry Initiative – Inspiring Women to Be Leaders in Orthopaedic Surgery and Engineering

On Saturday, September 26, faculty of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery participated in The Perry Initiative.

The mission of The Perry Initiative is a commitment to inspiring young women to be leaders in the exciting fields of Orthopaedic Surgery and Engineering. They advance their mission principally by running hands-on outreach programs across the country for women students in high school, college, and medical school.

Despite the increasing number of women entering medical and graduate school, women constitute only 12% of the academic faculty in orthopaedics and 7% of practicing orthopaedists, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Only 11% of the faculty at engineering schools are women, with that percentage being lower for mechanical engineering.

Engineers and orthopaedic surgeons work hand-in-hand to develop safe and effective implants for repairing broken bones, torn ligaments, and worn-out joints. Strong partnerships between surgeons and engineers are essential for improving the performance of orthopaedic implants and creating solutions to unmet clinical needs.

This year the Duke Department of Orthopaedics had the following participants:
Dr. Dianne Little
Dr. Sergio Mendoza
Dr. Joe Minchew
Dr. Allison Toth
Dr. Rachael Reilly
Dr. Erica Taylor
Dr. Ben Alman
Dr. Julie Neumann
