The Outreach Design Education Program (formerly called the Hk Maker Lab) was created and launched by Dr. Aaron Kyle at Columbia University in 2014. Dr. Kyle was recruited to bring his work to Duke University in 2022, and ODE’s inaugural year of programming in Durham was a huge success! Happi Adams joined Dr. Kyle’s team in 2023 with the aim of expanding the program’s reach in Durham Public Schools.
Since its launch, over 1000 students in New York and North Carolina have been introduced to engineering design through ODE-associated pre-college programs and courses.
Aaron Kyle is a Professor of the Practice in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. Kyle teaches first year design, medical device instrumentation, and capstone design courses. Kyle is passionate about engendering engineering identity in grades 6–12 students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
Kyle received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Kettering University and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue University. He is a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor societies. He gave the Diversity Award Plenary Lecture at the 2020 BMES Annual Meeting and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering and BMES. He is a member-elect of the BMES Board of Directors.
As a Durham native and former teacher in Durham Public Schools, Happi has participated in the efforts to understand and disrupt disparate academic outcomes in North Carolina public schools for many years. Her interests in education include critical pedagogy, curriculum design, project-based learning, community building, and developing students’ literacy skills alongside content knowledge across all disciplines, especially the sciences. She is a National Board-certified educator and holds a master’s degree in Language and Literacy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
