Duke Temporary Dialysis Catheter Placement

If a patient requires urgent hemodialysis, fellows should first ask their supervising attending if they is comfortable supervising line placement, and if the supervising nephrology attending says no, then the nephrology fellow should place a “consult to gen med procedure service” for central venous catheter placement. The team will then evaluate the patient and make sure they have capacity to do the procedure. The nephrology fellow should do the procedure with the gen med procedure service. If the patient is initiating dialysis on the floor these should be placed in the dialysis unit procedure (isolated) rooms.

service from noon -10p and typically they stop doing procedures at 8pm. They works 7 days a week including weekends.
