“Senses Of Venice”​ Interactive Exhibit Launches At Duke

“Senses of Venice” launches today at the Chappell Family Gallery which is located at the intersection of the Perkins and Rubenstein Libraries on Duke’s West Campus. My team’s second major collaboration with the brilliant folks at Duke’s Art, Art History & Visual Studies@Duke with the addition on this project including the Duke University Libraries, our Trinity School’s AV Engineering Team and a very special collaborator, Brad Lewis, a gentleman from my past trade, the producer of Ratatouille and “How To Train Your Dragon 3”

The centerpiece of the exhibit is a “dual” display consisting of an interactive screen that is synchronized with a projector on the wall behind it creating an incredible immersive experience as well as an experience that can be shared by the guest using the display as well as those gathered around. This was developed in partnership with folks at the University of Padua as well as CamerAnebbia in Italy.

Another wonderful touch added by CamerAnebbia is the use of a “multi-plane” effect in the exhibit’s other interactive screen. This effect that was originally used by Walt Disney in his early films by painting animation on different layers of glass and moving them independently.

The exhibit will be in place through December so please stop by and experience this unique look at this vibrant and historically important city!

NPR Demonstrates Technology To Make Radio More Accessible

NPR Labs was demonstrating their research into allowing those with disabilities to access radio programming and more importantly, emergency information over the airways. Braille information is broadcast over the air and then the electronic brailler will render the braille.  They are hopeful that having the diversity of radio program available to younger people will help encourage them to become more fluent at braille at a younger age.

Captioned radio works in a similar way to captioned television with the text information broadcast over the air and received by a specially equipped device for the hearing impaired. To help with emergency alerts that may come in the middle of the night (such as tornado warnings), they can broadcast over the air a signal that will activate a device to shake your bed to make sure you wake up if you are unable to hear a tornado siren or emergency broadcast tone.

JK Audio adds stereo to their BlueDriver bluetooth audio interfaces

The BlueDriver wireless audio interfaces allow you to use a professional quality microphone and connect to your mobile phone for recording or broadcasting remotely.  This year they introduced their S-Series that allows you to use a stereo microphone (shown above) for recording applications. The cost is around $500 for a pair for the stereo version and you can usually get around 40 feet of distance using Bluetooth.  You can use them in a pair (to convert back to standard audio to say place a stereo microphone in a location where running a cable would be difficult) or you can pair them with other bluetooth devices.

Low energy high performance studio lighting from Philips

Philips Strand Lighting offers a line of lights, controls, power and data distribution products that provide high performance and precise control over color temperature with very low energy consumption.  They show a conventional studio consuming 47, 720 watts of power at a cost for energy and consumables at $76,000.  In comparison, for the same lighting, Philips Strand lighting would only consume 4,484 watts of power at a cost of energy and consumables of $6000 per year. I did watch the color controls and the ability to make precise adjustments to color was clearly evident.

Professional quality microphones for iPhone and iPad

i-Series microphones from micW are designed to be used with iOS devices but can work with other handheld devices as well. They come in many different types and applications including measurement, recording and even a lavalier model.  The i456 cardioid mic (above) sells for around $120. They also have a lot of cool accessories such as a split adapter for headphones or the mic stand shown below.

acouPoP Helps Control Sound In the Conference or Classroom

The acouPoP system from acoustaCorp can provide a quick fix for a conference room or classroom where controlling sound reflections becomes important for conferencing or recording.  They can be installed on a wall with a motor to roll out or up similar to a shade or can be hung on a stand to control sound without having to alter the structure of the room at all.  The stand approach would allow you to move the system to the best location within a room or between rooms where it is needed. It’s available in custom colors starting around $900.

Dejero updates remote transmitter and adds iPhone to remote contribution

I reported on Dejero in previous NAB reports – their broadcaster in a box can simultaneously or alternatively leverage cellular, wireless and/or wired networks to deliver incredible quality and freedom at prices far less than traditional satellite systems. This year they reduced the size of their portable unit and added a video monitor screen. But in an even cooler development, they released their software to run on any PC or specialized PCs such as the Panasonic ToughBook which has a professional video interface. They’ve also released their software for iOS devices. You can see below how you can use cellular, wifi or both at the same time to get even better network performance.

Software for the PC and iOS is free, the new portable transmit unit sells for around $8000 and the receiver (required to use any of the transmission methods) sells for around $18,000.
