GreenGear Supply Company

  • Status: Ongoing
  • Description: During the fall of my sophomore year, I created an eco-friendly rain poncho as well as eco-friendly packaging. I am currently working on product quality, but already have a potential order from the Wildlife Conservation Society (owns the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, NY Aquarium and Prospect Park Zoo) for approximately 5000 units.
  • GC Relation: This startup focuses on the use of eco-friendly plastics. Not only does plastic use 8% of the world’s oil consumption, but also 300 million tons of plastic is produced each year. In addition, plastic causes significant pollution. It is estimated that by 2050, the oceans will have more plastic than fish. Therefore, we need to start exploring alternatives. With this startup, I hope to help reduce our dependence on oil – even if it’s only slightly, as well as set up a system that can be used in other systems. For instance, this material can be used within infrastructure to replace current plastic.

Melissa & Doug Entrepreneurship Program

  • Status: Completed
  • Description: In 2017, I took part in the Melissa & Doug Entrepreneurship Program. The Melissa & Doug Program is Duke’s “premiere entrepreneurship program,” and you can learn more about it here. In summary, it includes a summer stipend, special access to a network of Duke alumni entrepreneurs (including Melissa Bernstein herself), and trips to the home of Melissa and Doug Bernstein.
  • GC Relation: Through this program, I was able to have access to a network of entrepreneurs. This has allowed me to have many conversations about how we can improve our environment through entrepreneurship. For instance, one particular conversation was with Jeff Zeints, Obama’s economic advisor. During this conversation, we talked about America adopting maglev trains as well as a previous policy of America buying back used cars to reduce gas emissions. Overall, through the business skills I gained through this program as well as the mentorship I received have given me a more encompassing experience on how we can improve our world, such as infrastructure, through entrepreneurship.
