Alphabetic Excursions Illuminated Manuscripts

Like those found in their inspirational sources of Mughal and Persian Miniature paintings and manuscripts, Alphabetic Excursions Illuminated Manuscripts combine woodcut and silkscreen images to emphasize calligraphic styles with richly patterned backgrounds.  Although not following in the narrative, secular footsteps of their inspirations, the attention to detail, gridded use of the page and the richness of the image, enhanced by the combination of media is paramount to the image.  The centrally placed focal point demands that the viewer observe the image at a close range, and like their inspirational sources, the relationship between the central image and the border/background informs upon and interprets the marks found within the image’s core, with the background space continually interweaving itself with the central image. It is my hope that the viewer is obliged to look at the images in detail, to seek out what is unique and different and to try and decode that information.
