Student Leadership

J Shoemaker (they/she) is in the class of 2025 and plans on double majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies. They are also involved with Blue Devils United, Club Swimming, and the Connection Project. One of their favorite Duke memories is the Trinity Dorm Gingerbread House Competition (their team took second place!!). They love the Duke queer community for all it has done to support them and are always happy to talk with other students and help them get involved with the queer community!

Layla Arty (he/they) is class of 2024 and is majoring in biology and minoring in Japanese. He is involved with UCAE and hopes to be more involved with BDU in the future. Their favorite Duke memory is participating in DuArts’s glassblowing workshop which was spectacular and left him with a little glass owl to prove it. He also works with with LGBTQ+ youth as a crisis counselor and is excited to expand upon these services to bring even more joy and love to this warm and welcoming community!

Nathalia Compres Perez (she/her) is class of 2024 and is a History major with a minor in Philosophy and Linguistics. They are involved with Mi Gente and BMCD. Her favorite Duke memory isn’t a specific event but it’s the first time she had the feeling of belonging to a community, especially in a space that wasn’t built for people like them.

Jordan Reaves (he/him) is class of 2025 and plans to major in biology with a minor in chemistry and a certificate in doc studies. He is also part of Marching Band, Remote Area Medical, Research, and the Student Collaborative on Health Policy. One of his favorite memories at Duke is Donut Sundays with the Blackshears.

Cat Xia (use name) is in the class of 2024 and majoring in Biology. Cat is involved with BDU and CSGD. Cat’s favorite Duke memory is from Durham pride and being about to hand out merch to kids at the parade!
