Compliment A Colleague

Take time to recognize a colleague at Duke for making a difference.  If a Duke faculty or staff member has gone above and beyond the expectations of his or her job to help you,  a customer or a coworker, let him or her know how much you appreciate the effort. Your words of appreciation will be posted on this blog for others in the Duke community to read. Your words of appreciation will be posted on this blog throughout the year for others in the Duke community to read.

  1. When her supervisor had to be away from the office on an unpredictable schedule due to a serious family illness, Lynell Wiggins didn’t miss a beat in keeping the Library Administrative Office running smoothly. Not only did she manage the office well (in addition to her normal job of providing administrative support for three very busy staff members), but she took on this extra and unexpected responsibility with a wonderfully cheerful attitude. We are all grateful to her for “going above and beyond!”HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:14:”Lynell Wiggins”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:23:”Lynell.wiggins@duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:23:”lynne.grossman@duke.edu”;}

  2. It was a dark and blustery winter morning…not in Durham, but in Washington, D.C., where a guest lecturer for the class I teach at the Sanford School was stuck at Reagan National Airport. He was supposed to arrive at noon in Durham, and speak to my class at 4 p.m. Instead, at noon he told me by phone his flight had been cancelled and he was heading back to his office at the Department of Energy.

    Before he left the airport, though, he asked if perhaps we could do a digital video conference with the class. I said I knew my classroom was set up for it, but I’d have to check with the technical expert on these things, Rob Dipatri. I called Rob, and he said he’d be willing to give it a go.

    At 4 p.m., we not only had my guest lecturer on the big screen in my classroom in Rubenstein Hall, but he had his Powerpoint slides being pushed through as well. Since my guest was a senior Energy official who co-authored the text we are using for the class, this was a huge assist for me and my students. The class went off without a hitch.

    Now, for those of you who have done digital video conferences, you will know these are usually set up well in advance, and usually involve a testing of the line and the exchange of all sorts of technical mumbo jumbo before the big event. Rob managed to pull all that off in just a few hours. He could easily have told me at noon there simply wasn’t time to set the conference up. Instead, he fit my request into his other duties and made it work. I have done two DVC’s since, one of which involved a semi-complicated exchange with Mexico City, with equally excellent results.

    DVC technology has made it easier to being real world practicioners into my classroom. But on that winter morning, there was nothing easy about it. Rob Dipatri made all the difference.HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:14:”Robert Dipatri”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:23:”robert.dipatri@duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:19:”nancy.shaw@duke.edu”;}

  3. We held our second annual Winter Forum on January 9-11 at the Fuqua School of Business. On Saturday, January 8th we learned that there would not be any bus service running on Sunday to bring the freshmen from East Campus to the West Campus bus stop. After talking with a couple of individuals in Parking, I landed in the capable hands of Carl Hodges who got everything in place to have a large van available on Sunday at 3:00 to pick up the freshmen at the East Campus bus stop and deliver them to the front door of Fuqua in time for our opening session. He was also willing to have the van make a stop at the Central Campus bus stop to pick up students living on Central. The students were greatly appreciative of the effort Duke made to ensure they would arrive at the Winter Forum on time. I am grateful to Carl and his efforts – on a weekend no less – to coordinate last-minute travel plans.   4. Late one evening during budget construction, I encountered a BPS problem. I emailed a “trouble report” directly to OIT’s Bill Ignelzi. I’ve known and worked with Bill for many years and was confident that he would respond quickly. By the time I arrived at work the next morning, the problem had been fixed, and I had a follow-up email and a phone conversation from Bill. His quick turnaround enabled me to meet my deadline. It also reminded me of the expert, timely, and professional systems support that Bill (and others on his team) provide daily to Duke faculty, staff and students…..usually behind-the-scenes and out of the limelight. Thanks Bill for your excellent customer service!HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:12:”Bill Ignelzi”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:0:””;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:0:””;}

  5. Ellen can always be counted on when it comes to patient care and providing support. Whether in charge of the floor for the night she brings a helpful frame of mind to work when staff may need a extra hand. From putting in vital signs, answering call bells, and assisting with patient care needs. Ellen gives a 110% in all she does and it is greatly recognized. Ellen is an essential part of what makes up the team on the night shift Rehab. unit.

  6. I want to say “Thank You” to Steven Wilson (Student Services Officer and Visiting Student Coordinator) for helping me along the way. Steven provides an excellent level of customer service to his customers. He responds to e-mails and voicemails very efficiently. While working with Steven to register the Masters of Health Sciences in Clinical Leadership Learners, he is always willing to help when I have questions. He even helped resolve Financial Aide and billing issues that we experienced over the last two semesters for some Learners.

    I certainly hope during my career at Duke University Medical Center, I can provide the expertise and level of customer service that Steven has provided to “Our Team” during my first year.

  7. Jessica has been our Nurse Manager for 1 month and 6 days. She has brought a whole sense of relief to our clinic. I didn’t know that Managers like her still existed. She works with with us not against us.She does not hesitate to address anything that we are doing that is against policy and procedure. She has a pleasant personality which makes the work area a healthier enviorment to work in. Morale has improved a lot, work ethics have approved. The whole atmosphere of the clinic has improved.   8. A huge thank-you to Don Watt. Don handles most of the Facilities Management work tickets I submit for the two buildings where my department is located. He is always cheerful and friendly, and he completes the work efficiently. Don also keeps an eye out for a better way to do things – a better solution. When a ceiling light fixture failed in one of our computer labs, Don got the ticket. But instead of rotely fixing the light, he looked at the whole room set-up and purpose. The space is a teaching lab with a projector, but no dimming lights like in our other labs – just the flourescents, which can’t be dimmed. This meant that the lights were either all on (obscuring the image on the projector screen) or all off (which was too dark for people to read hard-copy materials at their desks). We don’t have the funds to install dimming lights in that space. Don came to me and suggested that he 1) remove all bulbs from the fixtures at the front of the lab where the projector screen is and 2) remove two bulbs each from each of the remaining fixtures, leaving two in. I agreed. And Don’s idea turned out to be the perfect no-cost solution. The lights are bright enough now so that people can read manuals and handouts at their computer workstations, but dim enough and far enough away from the projector screen that the projected image stays bright and visible from everywhere in the room. One of the instructors commented enthusiastically not once but twice about what a great change this was, and how much it helped people taking classes in that space. I’m embarrassed to say that I have worked here for over ten years and known in the back of my mind the whole time that the lighting set-up in that computer lab was poor. Since we haven’t had the funds to put in dimmers, I just shrugged it off as something that we’d have to live with. But Don took a moment to step back and evaluate how the lighting affected the function and use of that room, and he came up with the ideal solution. He cared enough to do this even though he’s not a member of our staff, and he could have just completed the work on the ticket and left that much sooner. P.S. Don was just here again helping with a plumbing problem. My co-worker Catherine happened to come in the office and said, “Oh, are you here for the ticket I just put in?” Don explained he was just finishing up with a plumbing issue, and asked what Catherine’s ticket was. She answered that a screen over an HVAC ceiling vent had fallen out. Don used his walkie-talkie to call in to work assignment and see if the ticket had gone to the HVAC crew. It had, but he asked if it could be re-assigned to him. It was, and Don fixed the screen right away. Sure it added a bit of work to his day, but he was helping us immediately and helping the HVAC crew by saving them a separate trip. That’s just how he thinks. Duke is lucky to have him.HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:8:”Don Watt”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:17:”dlwattjr@duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:21:”jack.burgess@duke.edu”;}

  17. I would like to first of all just say my hat goes off to Cynthia. I’ve watched her for about a month or so suffer with pain in her knees. Cynthia, being determined to come into the office and do her job as a Patient Care Associate, has begun to use a walker. Determined to do her work, she from time to time will use a wheel chair to get to different areas in the practice. Cynthia comes to the office daily, and with assistance parking her vehicle and getting into the office, her day begins as usual.There are days that I hurt for her, but she is determined to come to the office. My hat goes off to her. The admiration that she has for her office, as well as the determination to not stop is priceless.

  18. I am so glad to have had “The Week at Duke” email to prompt me to action with today’s employee appreciation notice.

    Our staff in Beaufort don’t get much opportunity to take advantage of Duke Appreciation 2011 discounts in Durham, so letting them know how much I appreciate them through this website is the least I can do.

    I owe a long overdue giant thank you to Barbra Howard, the Business Manager at the Marine Laboratory and her team — Patty Nolin and Shirley Miller. This team looks after what I imagine must be some of the quirkiest sets of business, from ships and pilings, to barnacles and whales, to corporate research funds and major federal grants, making it all seem easy.

    Barbra and her team have a “yes, let’s figure out how we can do this” attitude and wonderful grace when under pressure from faculty, including me, for the instant answer. I can pop into Barbra’s office with a question and she can point to an answer in a heartbeat. I love working with this team. 36. I want to recognize an outstanding co-worker, Angela Garrett. During the past year, I needed to be out of the office due to numerous health issues and due to 2 deaths in my family. During my absences, Angela always jumped right in to help keep things running smoothly for the doctors that I support. She always goes above and beyond in everything she does. Angela is my life saver. I couldn’t have made it through this past year without her support. Thank you Angela!

  44. Many thanks to Jamie! For the second time in less than two months, we have had a patient stranded by their transportation after clinic hours. Without a frown or complaint, Jamie informed me of the situation and that she would be here with the patient until her ride returned. And finding out that Jamie had already spoken with transportation and made pick up arrangements took it even a step further. She was able to put the patient at ease and quickly resolve the situation. And again, despite being at the clinic for nearly two hours after the close of business, she remained positive and did not complain. 48. Tylik Whitley

    I just wanted to send a note about Tylik Whitley. I have seen this gentlemen take CaviWipes and clean the wheelchairs from top to bottom before placing a patient in the wheelchair. I commend him on this. I have been in the ED 3 years and I have never seen any other transporter do this.
    Furthermore, he actually could be saving someone’s life by using good infection control measures. This also helps with our Oncology/Hematology patients that have very weak immune systems. I’m pleased to send him high remarks. 49. Emily recently met the needs of an upset family who had arrived for their child’s therapy session only to find out there had been a prior miscommunication and the primary treating therapist was out of the office. The parent was upset that they had driven a distance only to be told at registration that child may not be able to be seen. Emily was able to speak to the family with H.E.A. R. T. about the issue. Beyond just hearing the parent’s concern Emily worked it out in her own schedule to be able to provide a therapy session for the child at the spur of the moment. I asked Mrs. Genia Lynch for some help in finding my next meeting destination after my Hospital Administration meeting. She nicely explained to me several times but I have only been at Duke 3 times before and I still was not sure where to go for my next meeting. Mrs. Lynch was calm and patient in her explaining, and was very cheerful and helped me feel not so bad about being lost.

  53. Duke Sakai Team

    On behalf of the Sakai sponsors group (myself, Lynne O’Brien and Chris Meyer), I would like to express sincere appreciation for the work the Duke Sakai team has been doing to get Duke’s new Sakai learning management system ready for use in fall semester courses. Staff from the Center for Instructional Technology and the Office of Information Technology have been hard at work over the summer, coordinating with vendors, consulting with users, and working with campus partners in several offices. We are looking forward to our first full semester of using Sakai as a Duke tool, and we’d like to thank the members of the core team for their hard work in making this happen:

Although some of the systems needed proved to be challenging, DeAnna diligenty pressed on and obtained all of the information that I needed. Even though it was the last day before her vacation, I appreciate that DeAnna took over THREE HOURS out of her day to spend on the telephone with me to fully answer all questions and provide all documentation needed. Jan also teaches classes, gives garden tours and is very helpful with the two plant sales that we have each year. I wish that she could hear all the positive comments from visitors as they tour the Gardens, but instead she is busy making sure that the plantings look their best.   61. Marian Brown went above and beyond for me during the annual Winter Forum that was held at Fuqua on January 8-10, 2012 for approximately 100 undergraduate students along with 20 faculty and staff. I had been assured that the C-2 buses would be running on Sunday, January 8th since there were approximately 50 students living on East and Central Campuses who would need to make it to Fuqua by 4:00 for the keynote session. I learned early that afternoon that no buses were running that day. A colleague gave me Marian’s name and cell phone number since I couldn’t reach anyone in Parking on a Sunday and Duke Police couldn’t help me. Marian made arrangements to have a bus pick up students on East and Central Campuses to bring them to Fuqua and to have a bus pick them up from Fuqua on Sunday after the reception to return them to their respective campuses. Without her assistance, half of our students would not have been able to make it to the Sunday sessions.   114. Rochelle(Renee)Blakey was doing her routine calls to her patients and was informed by the mother the patient had passed away that morning. She then went on to ask Renee about getting the bed her daughter slept in removed from the home before the patient’s daughter returned from school. Well as we know that was not her responsibility but, that was not the response Renee replied with. She told the mother she would look into it and give her a call back. Renee found out who the bed was being rented from and made arrangements with the company to have the bed removed before the child returned to have to not only deal with the passing of her mother but,having to deal with an empty room along with an empty bed which no longer had her mother there to occupy it. That in itself would’ve been a bit overwhelming. Renee saw the need to assist in making this situation as easy as possible by going above her call of duty. After she made the arrangements with the company, she did as she said and called to confirm with the mother that the bed will be removed before the 1:00 arrival of the daughter. I didn’t want to let this opportunity pass me by without Renee being recognized for the generosity she showed toward this family.Thank you, Renee, for going above and beyond your call of duty!!!!!HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:12:”Renee Blakey”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:27:”rochelle.blakey@dm.duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:0:””;}

    She recently helped orient a medical student to the clinic. The medical student was so impressed with Pam that he asked if he could work with her again!

  125. Edna is a very good operating room nurse and colleague and I enjoy working with her. First, Edna is very thorough regarding her charting. Edna always gives 110% to any task she sets her mind to whether she was asked to or not. And finally, Edna is a good person who I learn a lot from just by being around her; she is like a big sister that I look up to.   144. Pauline Stroud displays all the qualities of a Duke nurse who also lives DUHS values of excellence, safety, integrity, diversity and teamwork every day. As Operation Administrator she is extremely resourceful and she has a unique way of taking complex operational problems and focusing with laser like sharpness to the core of it and offering a solution which is always right on the dot! She is a great communicator. When asked to interfere with Customer Service complaints or with disruptive patients as the Nurse Leader on duty; within few minutes of talking with the patient privately; usually the issue is resolved and patient becomes much more cooperative and calmer.She is always helpful during Rapid Response and Codes on the unit.If units are facing staffing shortages that day; Pauline as OA will think outside the box by offering solutions; calling FP staff and filling the needs for the necessary patient flow.I admire Pauline’s ability as a Nurse Leader and appreciate working with her as Charge Nurse.HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:21:”Pauline Stroud OA/DRH”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:23:”pauline.stroud@duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:22:”Gloria.McNeal@duke.edu”;}

  147. Being admitted to the hospital can be a scary event for a previously healthy young adult. But then finding out you have a new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes changes your life. Add to these overwhelming circumstances the fact that you don’t speak the language and you could have a real problem. This was the situation I was dealing with one recent Sunday afternoon as I went to see a new consult. As I arrived on the nursing unit, the charge nurse said the Spanish translator was in the room with the nurse, patient, and family. I thought “Oh, what good timing”. Little did I know how good that timing was until I met Ernest.

    Ernest Febus was excited to be there interpreting for the patient. He understood how the patient felt. Ernest was able to translate as I provided medical care and education for this patient and his family. Not only did he turn my words and demonstration into something the patient understood; he made the patient, family, and me feel more at ease. I have often provided education and medical management using the ‘blue phone’ or other translators. I have been effective through their services, but having a translator who really understood and could clarify what I was saying with both the patient and me was wonderful. What I had dreaded that day, changed into the best patient interaction I have ever had with a translator. I’m really grateful for Ernest, his dedication to the patient population he serves, and the difference he made for this patient, family, and me.HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:12:”Ernest Febus”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:24:”ernest.febus@dm.duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:0:””;}

  149. I left a voicemail message at the Duke Bookstore phone number a couple of weeks ago to ask about getting a “bouncy ball” with the Duke logo to give to one of our staff members who is leaving Duke (she sits on a ball at her desk so we thought this would be a good gift idea for her). I have to say I didn’t expect that I would get a response. However, I received an email within a day from Barbara Whitlow to tell me she had contacted one of their vendors to see if this was possible. Not only did she find one, but she asked for the height of the person to whom we were giving the ball to ensure the ball was the proper size.

    Throughout the process, Barbara kept me informed via email and was always on top of things. She promptly responded to my messages and let me know when to expect the ball. As promised, the ball was delivered before the date we needed it in order to give it to the person at her farewell reception yesterday. It is a perfect Duke blue ball with the Duke logo on it.

    On top of everything, Barbara said the Bookstore wasn’t going to charge for the ball because the vendor hadn’t charged for the ball (the vendor is trying to get their foot in the door with this type of item). I suggested to Barbara that others might be interested in buying this item and she said the Bookstore was considering adding it to their online merchandise. Yippee!

    So, within two weeks of my initial inquiry, we had exactly what we wanted and Barbara was the reason! A big shout-out to her!HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:15:”Barbara Whitlow”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:24:”barbara.whitlow@duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:22:”jim.wilkerson@duke.edu”;}

  167. Our office held a Chapel Climb yesterday (May 5, 2015) as a way to express our appreciation to our staff during Employee Appreciation Month. Christy Lohr Sapp and Sara Blaine Clark helped us make arrangements to go to the top of the Chapel, so I’m grateful to them for letting us do this. However, Oscar went above and beyond the call of duty in helping us with our “journey to the top.” In particular, one of our staff members ended up not being able to make the climb so he took her up in the tiny elevator and personally escorted her the rest of the way to the top (the elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top as there are another 40 or so winding, narrow steps to climb). Once at the top, he made sure she was okay and then he gave her his cell phone number so she could call him when she was ready to go down. He promptly came back up and helped her down the steps to the elevator and ensured she made it down safely. We carried down a large bag of trash and Oscar took it from us to throw out so we didn’t have to carry it back to our office. I recalled having read an article a couple of years ago about an incredibly friendly and helpful Chapel housekeeper by the name of Oscar. We were fortunate to be able to get to meet Oscar and to find out for ourselves why he’s one of Duke Chapel’s (and Duke University’s) assets. Thank you Nikki and Patty :)HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:6:”Nikki “;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:24:”nichole.ryan@dm.duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:21:”dale.lake@dm.duke.edu”;}

  178. Cleveland is an asset to Duke Clinical Staffing Department. He is a selfless leader who also leads by example. I joined the department over one year ago and he willingly took me under his wing to help make my transition and my stay very smooth. Cleveland is available at any time to answer questions and provide professional guidance to, not only myself, but also others. Recently, I asked Cleveland to mentor one of our NCA’s who endeavors to pursue a career in the medical field. I was reluctant considering the many hats he wears and just how busy he actually is. Cleveland willingly accepted without hesitation.

    Cleveland, thank you for your leadership and mentorship. I admire you and your accomplishments during my short time here. Unfortunately, this commentary pales in comparison to what you really deserve, but I just want everyone to know what a great person you are professionally and personally. Thank you.HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:15:”Cleveland Sauls”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:24:”cleveland.sauls@duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:16:”j.mckay@duke.edu”;}

  179. I wanted to commend Brandon Walker for going above and beyond his job expectations to assist a patient. The patient had been receiving a treatment all day long and was exhausted. He was in a wheelchair and could barely stand. To top it off, he had his daughter with him who was also taking care of her small child in a stroller. Brandon saw the situation and immediately stepped up and volunteered to push the patient down to the entrance. The daughter was extremely grateful for the help, but Brandon didn’t stop there. He stayed with the man while his daughter got the car, and even helped him get into the car safely before sending them on their way. I know this would make a huge difference to me and I am so glad that Duke has people like Brandon Walker who work here.HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:14:”Brandon Walker”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:20:”b.walker@dm.duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:23:”stella.hunt@dm.duke.edu”;}

  180. Ashley went above and beyond to make her patient comfortable and confident on her first day of treatment. The patient presented with difficult access issues and required multiple sticks to get drug levels. Ashley recommended a port, educated the patient and family, assisted in getting the procedure scheduled, and was able to combine lab draws to obtain all the labs needed for the plan of care. Her professionalism was noted by the family and collegues. Thanks Ashley for being an excellent leader, patient advocate and nurse.HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:14:”Ashley Scoggan”;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:26:”ashley.scoggan@dm.duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:28:”(rita.steinbauer@dm.duke.edu”;}

  182. Shavoo is an asset to housekeeping! Our galley hasn’t been this clean in the last 6 months. I appreciate her taking the time to clean an area that we use to serve patient’s that is often overlooked.HRCUSTOMCOMMENTFIELDSa:3:{s:19:”comment_person_name”;s:7:”Shavoo “;s:20:”comment_person_email”;s:21:”Shavoo.price@duke.edu”;s:24:”comment_supervisor_email”;s:22:”dyrra.johnson@duke.edu”;}
