Welcome to The Lyceum!

Hello!

Welcome to The Lyceum- Duke University’s first interdisciplinary mathematics social club! We’re so excited you found us. Inspired by the ancient Greek Lyceum temple where scholars debated theses and theorems, our club works to encourage passionate mathematical discussion between members of the Duke community. Like DUMU, our group seeks to engage students on mathematical topics. But instead of doing so through mathematical competitions, The Lyceum takes a more social and discourse-based approach to studying interdisciplinary mathematics. As a group, we’re looking to challenge the stereotype of what a math major at Duke looks like and we hope to champion the diversity of our university’s many budding interdisciplinary scholars.

Who can join?

The most exciting part about The Lyceum? Absolutely any member of the Duke Community is invited to join us! Graduate or undergraduate; math major or no- we want to hear what you have to say! The Lyceum also takes a strong stance on championing the voices of BIPOC/POC, LGBTQIA+, and female-identifying voices in mathematics. With interdisciplinary mathematics at our group’s core, we know it’s diverse opinions that really make a difference in academia. As such, we can’t wait to learn more about you, your experiences, and your many thoughts pertaining to mathematics!

How does The Lyceum meet?

Every month, The Lyceum will hold discussion sessions and fun events in which students can come together to discuss ideas in mathematics and socialize. We not only invite students from other academic backgrounds to join in on these events- we encourage it! Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, these events will be held over Zoom for the foreseeable future.

The Lyceum will also hold weekly study sessions in which students can study in the company of one another. Throughout each study session (which will also be conducted over Zoom), the club will encourage the use of breakout rooms to facilitate group study sessions for those seeking additional help on their homework. To visit the zoom breakout rooms, please use the document below! Each ‘room’ contains a link to said zoom event, open 24/7. In order to get the password to these zoom rooms, please sign up for our listserv by going to this page and hitting the ‘subscribe’ link!

How is The Lyceum structured?

Like many clubs at Duke, The Lyceum has the traditional positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Social Chair. However, The Lyceum is unique in its use of a council-based system. Because we want to incorporate as much student feedback as possible, The Lyceum has four Class Councils, one for each undergraduate graduating year. Each class council is also lead by a Head of Class. These Class Councils are tasked with deciding everything from what topics of discussion should be held at each roundtable to how the club can better serve students both in mathematics and Duke in general. Should you be interested in joining your Class Council, we implore you to email our current acting president at lyceum@math.duke.edu . Similarly, if you’re a graduate student interested in starting a Class Council for the Duke Graduate Department, please don’t hesitate to contact this same address with further questions/ideas.

Discrimination and/or harassment based upon race, color, national origin, sex (including pregnancy), gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, religion, genetic information, age, disability, or veteran status is prohibited”.
