Permaculture

Permaculture

Permaculture is a creative design process based on whole-systems thinking informed by ethics and design principles that feature on this site. Permaculture is certainly going to play a major role in nature’s future. I love this way of thought because it has not only proven to be a successful principle (ie. we saw a man in the documentary grow 200 fruits in Massachusetts), but it also gives the appropriate respect to nature. Humans often think that they know best and do not realize that nature is really good at what it does. This way of thought encourages people to do as little as they can because nature left alone accomplishes great things. For example, if we plant crops in rows so they follow the contours of a hill the crops would grow more successfully than if they were planted in the typical grid plot. I believe that if people learn that nature is incredible at what it does they will respect it more, which would lead them to care for it more. I also like that permaculture stresses human uninvolvement. Once a space has been updated to permaculture standards, no major work will ever have to be done to that land again. This means that people will spend less money on fertilizer, labor and general up keep. On a deeper level, the environment benefits because there will be less carbon emissions emitted from less use of power equipment, less pollutants from less use of fertilizers and less erosion and soil compaction from less human presence. We know that how we are living in the world is not possible to sustain given the finite number of resources. However, if we can all adapt to the ideas of permaculture, we can create a future that blends environmentally sustainability and comfort!
