As the coronavirus rapidly spreads across the world, every university is working hard to protect all their students, faculty and staff on campus and beyond. JVU membership take this opportunity to open a Zoom meeting to share each one’s experience on response to the virus and any lesson learned. Below are the topics we covered during our first meeting held in March 20th. Also, the membership make a consence on a weekly meeting on this topic.
Common challenges faced by JUVs
- Difficulty in getting faculty back to campus in China
- Restrictions on ports of entry
- Faculty visa/Insurance
- Online teaching ( students lack of motivation/ lose communication with peers &faculty/technology issues/ various time zones/how to creative learning for online courses/ student felt overwhelming on workload/ feeling isolation from community
- Possible Impact on commencement
- District government restrict on newly-hired foreign faculty on-board
Possible solutions
- HR provide cars for any airport pickup and institution provides subsidies for quarantine costs. Ningbo allows returning faculty to be isolated on campus, but other cities/provinces are using hotels
- 24/7 emergency hotlines for faculty arrival
- Keep both online and offline classes/ forums when school re-opens
- Online lecture recordings/materials available & accessible for students at any time
- Faculty has one-on-one session/ personal chat with students (if possible)
- Keep sharing resources to one another through JVU WeChat Group. Here’s the useful resources from DKU, feel free to check it out https://sr.ithaka.org/publications/duke-kunshan-university/https://learninginnovation.duke.edu/keepteachingdku/
