Episode 1: The West End

Hosted by Shelvis Lee Ponds and narrated by Jeff Nelson, the first episode of the Just Space Podcast recounts a summer walking tour of the West End neighborhood of Durham, just off East Campus, with 18 people from Residence Life at Duke. We spoke with local business owners, folks raised in the West End, and transplants to the community. The way they narrated how their community was changing told us something about the forces at work in this space. We decided to start our podcast here because the the West End has undergone extraordinary change and it is, we contend, a perfect case study for ‘waking up’ to space: to begin to see that space matters, and that space is a matter of justice. To see and experience the West End neighborhood yourself, we strongly encourage you to listen to this episode HERE.

Episode 2: Graveyards

In this episode, Shelvis Ponds sits down with Dr. Adam Rosenblatt, Professor of International Comparative Studies at Duke University, to talk about the way racial and socioeconomic injustice manifests in, of all places, graveyards. Dr. Rosenblatt’s research examines the cultural and political contexts for abandoned African American graveyards, and the way that matters of “just space” play out there.
