Deadline: January 14, 2019
The Franklin Humanities Institute is pleased to invite proposals for seed grants of $5,000 to $10,000 for Global Collaborations in the Humanities. These grants are intended to support inquiry into research areas that cannot be adequately addressed without cross-national or cross-regional scholarly dialogue, or without exchanges across languages and philosophical/methodological traditions. Proposed projects may be disciplinary or interdisciplinary and may be focused on any historical period, but must be grounded in the humanities and interpretive social sciences.
Eligibility
This call is open to regular-rank Duke faculty in the humanities and interpretive social sciences. Proposals should come from at least one Duke faculty and one non-U.S. partner, or a small group of Duke and international collaborators, who will serve as primary organizers for the project.
Budget
Seed grant funds will be available for use upon approval of the proposal (estimated in February/March 2019) through June 30, 2020. Eligible expenses include:
- Airfares, accommodations, local transportation, passport/visa fees, and other relevant for Duke faculty traveling to meet with collaborators outside the U.S., or vice versa, for planning, workshops, seminars, etc.
- Public events such as conferences, symposia, etc. that are part of longer-term, ongoing collaborations (rather than one-off events)
- Professional services that facilitate long-distance and/or multilingual exchange such as translation, simultaneous interpretation, and video conference service subscription
- Supplemental hourly salary for Duke graduate students assisting with grant activities (if within Graduate School earning cap).
Grant funds CANNOT be used for faculty salary support or course releases. Funds will be held at and administered by the FHI.
FHI Global Collaborations grants may be combined with other internal or external funding sources. To see a list of Duke funding opportunities in the humanities (updated each year), please go to https://researchfunding.duke.edu/duke-internal-funding-opportunities and follow the link. In particular, note that the Duke Office of Global Affairs provides funding for innovative programs, activities, and approaches in global engagement (https://global.duke.edu/faculty-resources/funding): health humanities and environmental humanities are among the topic areas for priority consideration.
Program Support
Project organizers will be expected to secure their own staff or student support for travel arrangements and event logistics such as space reservation, catering, transportations, etc. With advanced arrangement, the FHI may be able to provide space and technological assistance for teleconferences or video conferences. Depending on staff availability and other factors of feasibility, we may also be able to assist with video documentation or live streaming of events taking place here at Duke. We would be pleased to help circulate announcements of any public events, publications, or other research outcomes supported by the grant.
Final Report
We ask that award recipients submit a narrative report on grant-funded activities by July 31, 2020.
Proposal Guidelines
To apply, please include the following in your proposal:
- A 2-page description of the project’s intellectual rationale and international dimensions, the state of the collaboration to date, and the activities you hope to carry out with this grant, including projected dates
- A proposed budget: please specify the amount requested from the FHI as well as other funding sources you have secured or plan to pursue
- CVs for the primary Duke and non-Duke organizers
- A list of all other Duke and non-Duke participants.
Please send completed proposals to FHI@duke.edu by 5:00 p.m., Monday, January 14, 2019. Please direct questions to FHI Associate Director Christina Chia (christina.chia@duke.edu).
