DGHI Is Accepting Proposals for Global Maternal Adolescent and Child Health Research

Funding opportunity

Deadline: December 11, 2017

The Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) invites interdisciplinary teams to submit research proposals in the area of Global Maternal, Adolescent and Child Health (MACH). Maternal, Adolescent and Child Health is a research priority for DGHI.

Maternal, Adolescent, and Child Health is an emerging and significant field. Every day 800 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, 2.9 million newborns die within their first month, and an additional 2.6 million are stillborn. Increasing numbers of adolescents around the globe are living on the street, are abused and neglected, are engaging in high risk behaviors, and suffer from physical and mental health needs. Many prematurely die due to accidents, suicide, violence, pregnancy related complications and other illnesses. Research is needed to reduce mortality and morbidity for preventable and treatable causes in the Maternal, Adolescent and Child Health field.

DGHI seeks to provide pilot funds to stimulate interdisciplinary research in maternal, adolescent, and child health with the goal of enabling investigators to leverage preliminary findings and data to obtain larger awards of external funding. Collaborative and interdisciplinary proposals are especially encouraged. Proposals that support a sustainable line of research in maternal, adolescent, and child health will be prioritized.

Eligible Applicants

All Duke University faculty are eligible to apply for funding. Proposals may include collaborators from other institutions, but the PI must be a Duke faculty member. Junior faculty and faculty new to maternal, adolescent and child health are strongly encouraged to submit proposals.

Budgets

The budget may include: supplies, support for technicians, research assistants, and graduate students; research-related travel; and other justifiable research expenses. Faculty salary, travel to scientific meetings, and indirect costs are not allowable expenses. Applicants may apply for up to $25,000.

Smaller proposals for shorter periods are also encouraged. Project duration should be less than 12 months.

Application Requirements

Applicants must propose low and middle-income countries (a listing of eligible countries can be found at the World Bank website). Applicants are encouraged to identify collaborating in-country investigators, and should describe plans for how the results generated will be applied to future external funding, as this will be an important criterion in the review.
