We’re Hiring a Website Administrator


The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and Interdisciplinary Studies at Duke seek a website administrator to perform a variety of technical and creative duties for their WordPress and Drupal websites. The website administrator will be responsible for overseeing the development and management of these sites—http://nicholasinstitute.duke.edu/, http://sites.nicholasinstitute.duke.edu/, http://interdisciplinary.duke.edu/, https://rubensteinfellows.duke.edu, and https://bassconnections.duke.edu/, as well as the maintenance of the Bass Connections central database. The candidate will be tasked with ensuring their consistency, effectiveness, design quality, and overall functionality. A key member of the communications teams at the Nicholas Institute and Interdisciplinary Studies at Duke, the website administrator will play an active role in crafting our marketing and communication strategies by enhancing one of our most valuable outreach tools.

This person would split their time at offices in both organization’s Durham offices: 20 hours per week with Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and 20 hours per week with Interdisciplinary Studies at Duke.

Work Performed

The chosen candidate has the opportunity to make a visible impact on our respective brands and create a positive impression for partners, donors, students, policy makers, and other site visitors by:

  • Prioritizing, planning, and managing changes to existing systems and implementing new services.
  • Identifying and addressing technical problems and updates, including but not limited to, browser functionality issues, broken links, and Drupal/WordPress-related bugs.
  • Helping to load content such as news stories, events, photos, and research publications.
  • Generating new and revising existing web pages.
  • Evaluating all content for its value in search engine optimization and suggesting site enhancements that improve our rank. These efforts should include both manual and electronic search engine registrations and optimizations.
  • Conducting usability testing and using Google analytics data to ensure all parts of our sites are easy to navigate and use.
  • Ensuring cross-browser compatibility of all websites.
  • Providing direction and carrying out design changes when needed.
  • Ensuring the programs’ web servers, hardware, and software are correctly operating, which includes making regular, timely security updates to all Drupal and WordPress sites.
  • Maintaining the Bass Connections central database, especially in relation to populating the program’s website content.
  • Using software programs such as Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, and InDesign to create interactive and static infographics, illustrations, and other web-based visual enhancements.
  • Providing video and media production support for live streaming events on the website and coordinating with Duke IT to capture and post events held in campus facilities with recording capability.
  • Regularly examining Google analytics data from our websites, creating monthly reports on trends, and strategizing with our communications teams on ways to better market materials and increase engagement. The website administrator will also set up campaigns to track marketing goals within Google analytics.
  • Providing additional services such as acting as a liaison for obtaining clearance for copyrighted material and ensuring adherence to Duke branding and style standards.
  • Liaising and consulting with Duke Web Services, Duke’s in-house web development group, as well as other web vendors contracted to assist in developing or redesigning the Nicholas Institute’s and Bass Connections’ websites.
  • Staying abreast of current best practices and trends in IT and web development at Duke and within higher education

Work requires communication, analytical, and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university where course work focused on communications, computer science, information technology, or the like. A minimum of two or more years of full-time experience managing internet/intranet website production, including content development and site support, design, development, and maintenance.

Skills Desired

  • Thorough knowledge of HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, Git, Drupal API, WordPress API, and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Front-end and back-end development experience, including in-depth knowledge of the Drupal theming layer
  • Strong project and time management skills required to efficiently move between work places and multiple, concurrent projects. Experience with Basecamp a plus.
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Proficiency with WordPress and Drupal content management systems and ability to update Drupal/WordPress modules and resolve Drupal/WordPress configuration issues
  • Ability to manage relatively large-scale Drupal installations, including using Git version control and the Features module to manage and properly maintain custom site configurations
  • Communications and interpersonal skills
  • Up-to-date knowledge of on-page SEO techniques, best practices, and tactics for improving search engine results
  • Proficiency with Google analytics
  • Strong visual design sense
  • Graphic design experience
