University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), chartered in 1789, is the nation’s first public university and is consistently ranked among the top U.S. public universities in research support which last year totaled more than $678 million. The university’s strategy of targeted investment in “big idea” research themes knits together existing strengths to create interdisciplinary new thrusts. Relative to homeland security, UNC has deep expertise in areas ranging from science and engineering to public health, infectious disease, law and the social sciences. The university is home to the new Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence in Natural Disasters, Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management.
