IHI Open School

The Institute for Health Improvement is excited to invite Dr. Kevin Shah to give our 2nd OpSwap of the year! Dr. Shah is the Medical Director for Primary Care Innovation and Improvement and has built his career leading many quality improvement initiatives throughout Duke to improve healthcare delivery to our patient populations. Throughout the years, he has developed a framework with which to view healthcare systems and healthcare problems that is founded on the principles of quality improvement.

Come join us for an interactive workshop with Dr. Shah to learn how health system leaders evaluate problems within the health system and come up with innovative solutions to address them. He will be teaching the principles of improvement in health care and we’ll work together to address an actual health care problem impacting our system today!

Each year, the Chancellor’s Scholarship was awarded to a QISP student at the culminating symposium. The scholarship provides students the opportunity to travel and present their QISP project at the National Forum on Quality Improvement in Healthcare. Nicole Dalal (MS2, SOM) was the 2016-2017 Chancellor’s Scholarship winner and presented her work at the 2017 IHI National Conference in Orlando. Well done Nicole! Here are some highlights from her experience.

She was an inspiration to hear speak and really informative with her insight about how to work collaboratively with patients.

The Quality & Innovation Scholars Program (QISP) is a unique six month long interdisciplinary, team-based practicum opportunity in healthcare quality improvement. The QISP scholars will complete didactic training in quality improvement and are matched with a faculty mentor to participate in an ongoing quality improvement project.

Duke IHI was pleased to host Dr. Mather, MD MBA, as part of our ongoing speaker series. Dr. Mather is the vice chairman of practice innovation in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine and a faculty member at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Mather discussed the Practice Innovation Unit at Duke Orthopaedics and one of their undergoing projects – the Joint Health Program. This project aims to provide a comprehensive care plan for osteoarthritis care. Currently, care is skewed towards surgical management, however for many patients, this is unnecessary. The Joint Health Program establishes a primary osteoarthritis provider that can coordinate and tailor the chronic care involving physical therapy, social work, and treatment regimen to patient needs. This helps ensure better selection of patients requiring surgery and gives patients a very individualized plan for their osteoarthritis. Initial results have shown very positive patient feedback.

We were please to host Dr. Geoffrey Ginsburg as the speaker for the Duke IHI Open School 2017-2018 kickoff event. Dr. Ginsburg shared the career insights he’s learned over his years as Director of the Duke Center for Applied Genomics and Precision Medicine and MEDx. He highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of these two institutes and the growing need for quality improvement work in the fields of genomics and medical engineering to ensure successful implementation of innovative solutions into our healthcare system.

The Quality & Innovation Scholars Program (QISP) is a unique six month long interdisciplinary, team-based practicum opportunity in healthcare quality improvement.

Each year after an application process, QISP scholars are paired with Duke University Health System faculty conducting forward-thinking Quality Improvement and Innovation work. In addition, scholars complete a formalized curriculum (IHI Open School Modules) and discussion sessions led by faculty members.

Examples of past project opportunities include:

• Standardizing Text Paging to Improve Physician-Nurse Communication: A Pilot Study
• Standardizing Protocols in the Duke Outpatient Clinic.
• Developing patient literacy evaluation processes
• Assessing the efficiency of primary-care-to-specialty-care referrals
• Creating pediatric care guidelines and improving adherence to evidence based care
• Reconciling quality indicators in surgery across multiple databases
• Developing a balance sheet of provider performance to improve efficiency in outpatient, underserved settings

When working to improve healthcare, perhaps no question is more fundamental than “What are we trying to accomplish?” A well constructed aims statement is an essential tool that guides improvement work.

Karen Baldoza (IHI Executive Director and and faculty for the Improvement Coach Professional Development Program) and Christina Gunther-Murphy (an IHI Executive Director and faculty for the Back to Basics: Building Essential QI Skills Quick Course) have written an excellent article with Myths (and Tips) about creating an Improvement Aims Statement.
