Overview:

Throughout much if my coursework at Duke, I explored issues surrounding embodied approaches to interface design. Through workshops, discussions, presentations, and rapid instructional design sessions, I developed expertise in the processes involved in developing and articulating the methodologies for generating new forms of human/computer interface.

Topics I have studied and explored include biomimetics, haptic body knowledge, multi-modal sensing, physical computing, physical/digital relationships, networked relations, database potentials, and the potentials of virtual space and different qualities of space, both visual and sonic.

Senior Thesis Project:

In my final year at Duke, I planned, designed, and built an interface system as part of the Graduation with Distinction Project in Visual & Media Studies. The project involved developing a prototype for a system that interprets a user’s emotional state from neurofeedback responses (brain-waves) and links them to changes in colorimetric properties of light (i.e. hue, contrast, saturation etc.). The data and experiences to be gleaned through interacting with this interface system can hopefully provide new insights into the mechanisms of color perception and add to what is understood of color’s role in industries ranging from art, design, marketing, psychology, and technology.

Below you can find a presentation and an entirely self-coded website outlining my project in further detail along with a copy of my thesis paper. There you can find out more about the processes I developed to detect emotion from EEG (brain wave) impulses as well as the programming and functionalities of the mobile app I created:
