While I worked as a coach for Achieving Success through Community, Engagement, and Networking at Duke (ASCEND), I saw the impact that educational resources had on a student’s ability to succeed. During this pre-orientation program, I taught incoming first-generation, low-income students math and connected them with other students, professors, and resources that had helped me during my time at Duke. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic and remote learning were detrimental to their grasp of algebra coming into the program and highlighted to me the disparity in resources for STEM education. I worked with my students to understand the content, establish consistent learning schedules, and develop new math skills, setting them up for their college careers. Going forward, to support scientific collaboration between diverse fields, interests, and people, I hope to increase early STEM support for underrepresented groups.
