Congratulations to Fahmin Basher, T32 alum (2022-2024), who received an OPSD Technician Award ($25,000)/year in support of her research.

Congratulations to Heme T32 Alum, Dr. Fahmin Basher for her recent Award!
Dr. Fahmin Basher received a $35,000 award from the Mario Family Foundation to investigate the role of the DNA sensor, AIM2 in immune complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Hematology T32 Summer Research Students
The Hematology T32 Program is pleased to welcome Mandisa Keswa and Y-Nhi Bui for summer research:
Mandisa Keswa is a rising 2nd year medical student at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine in Pasadena, CA. Mandisa was mentored by Drs. Marilyn Telen and Allison Ashley-Koch on a research project titled, “Relationship of genetic and functional red cell parameters to pain episode frequency in Sickle Cell Disease”.
Y-Nhi Bui is a rising 2nd year medical student at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. She was mentored by Drs. Grace Lee and Marilyn Telen on a research project titled, “Modulation of neutrophil degranulation by red cell exchange in patients with sickle cell disease.”
Congratulations to both students for their successful research leading to first authored abstract submissions to the American Society of Hematology Meetings in December 2025.

Congratulations to Dr Katherine Zhou who won both a 2024 Duke Cancer Institute Pilot award and the 2024 Young Investigator Award from ASCO.
Dr. Sainvil wins DCI Award!
Congrats to Dr. Sainvil for receiving the 2023 Duke Cancer Institute Cancer Research Young Investigator Pilot Award RFA for a Community Outreach, Engagement and Equity award. The title for the one year award is “Understanding Disparities in Biobanking Participation among Minoritized Patients Undergoing HSCT in Durham, NC”
