This is a quick guide demonstrating how to update your mac to a new version of macOS.
Notes Before Updating:
- Always make sure you have a valid backup before attempting an OS upgrade. While things rarely go wrong during OS updates, we want to make sure your data is safe before attempting to upgrade.
- Before you update to Catalina, you’ll want to check the following:
- You will want to check to see if you have any 32-bit apps you can’t live without after this upgrade.
To do this:- Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen.
- Select ‘About This Mac.’
- Click ‘System Report.’
- Scroll down to the ‘Software’ section and click ‘Applications.’
- On the right, you’ll see a list of apps and a column labeled 64-Bit (Intel). If any of those apps have a ‘No’ in that column, it means they’re not 64-bit apps, so you’ll need to update them or find a replacement before you update your OS.
- You will want to check to see if you have any 32-bit apps you can’t live without after this upgrade.
- We are currently advising our users to hold off on updating to macOS Big Sur at this time.

- After a few preinstallation tasks, your computer will restart, and the OS will finish installing. Once done, you should come back up to a login screen. Log in, and you should be running a newer version of macOS.
