About Us

As a team of Duke University students, we are working on a project called “CEASE,” or Community Education About Smoke Exposure.  One of our goals is to help the Durham community learn how the exposure of environmental tobacco smoke during pregnancy and childhood may increase the risk of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children.  A great way to engage the community in learning, is to host a contest!  Participate in our contest and share what you’ve learned from this website with your community.

What is NICHES?

Our CEASE project is the focus of the community outreach and education arm of a new center at Duke University.  The Center for Study of Neurodevelopment and Improving Children’s Health following Environmental tobacco Smoke exposure is abbreviated “NICHES“.  NICHES scientists have 3 main areas of study concerning the relationship between tobacco smoke exposure during pregnancy and childhood and the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (see “Research“). Another one of our goals is to help convey to the community the findings of the NICHES scientists who study how prenatal and postnatal exposure to tobacco smoke could place children at increased risk of developing ADHD.
