Welcome!

My name is Michael C. Hawley. I obtained my PhD in Political Science from Duke in 2017, specializing in political theory and religion and politics. From 2018-2020, I was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Government at Bowdoin College. Recently I returned to Duke as a research fellow and Managing Director of the Program in American Values and Institutions.

My first book, Natural Law Republicanism: Cicero’s Liberal Legacy, will be available in print from Oxford University Press in November. It explores how constitutionalism emerged within the republican tradition as a way of reconciling a voluntaristic notion of justice with a commitment to moral objectivism.

I have a wide variety of other research and teaching interests. I am a political theorist in large part because this field has always been especially open to exploring the important questions of human life across disciplinary boundaries, using a variety of methodological approaches. I plan to continue to explore whatever questions spark my curiosity, and so my research currently involves contemporary theories of rhetoric, Roman and early modern political thought, Islamic and Christian political philosophy, modern just war theory, and American political thought.
