The Alphabet
YouTube. Watch this silly video: Learn Greek alphabet in less than 10 minutes. If you have time, start practicing your alphas, betas, and gammas. That is, memorize in sequence (just like a, b, c, d): alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta, iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, ksi, omicron, pi, rho, sigma, tau, upsilon, phi, chi, psi, omega.
Th Jan. 12 Chapters 1α and 1β.Learn: the Greek alphabet (i.e. be able to write out all lower and uppercase letters in sequence for a quiz at the beginning of class). If you're having trouble, go back and look at the tracing exercise we practiced in class.Review: The first page of the Greek Pronunciation Guide (distributed in class). Study: pp. xxvii-xxx in textbook (start with "Breathings"; stop at “Writing Greek Letters").Write out for homework: Write out (but do not translate) the first two sentences of the Greek passage beginning with ὁ Δικαιόπολις Ἀθηναῖος ἐστιν in “Part 4: Practice in Pronunciation and Writing” of textbook (p. xxxiv).
Study: "Vocabulary" (pp. 1-2 & 9 in textbook) and “Grammar” (pp. 3-5 in textbook). If you don't understand the latter, don't panic. We will discuss this in detail immediately after our alphabet quiz.
