Boren Awards support American students traveling and studying one of over 60 less-commonly-taught languages critical to U.S. interests (in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, or the Middle East). Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students are eligible. Those accepting Boren Awards commit to serve for at least one year of competitively paid employment in the Federal government.
