Position Description

The Center for Multicultural Affairs (CMA) is one of three identity centers within Intercultural Programs at Duke University. Our mission is to create a more equitable and inclusive campus environment. We embolden students to examine the intersections of identity, to think critically about diversity and social justice, and to utilize their unique and collective voices to enact positive change.

Responsibilities of the Graduate Assistant include:

Programming

· Plans, develops, and coordinates programs for our campus community that supports Native American/Indigenous students.

· Organize Native American/Indigenous graduation ceremony.

· Co-plans and co-coordinates annual Powwow celebration with student committee.

· Evaluates and assesses programmatic effectiveness through regular qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.

Advising

● Act as a mentor and advocate for Native American/Indigenous students.

● Co-advises Native American Student Alliance (NASA) about academic and personal development resources.

● Supports the development of student coalitions and organizations seeking partnership, guidance, or advice on issues.

● Works with student groups on planning their multicultural events. Assures issues of safety, security, and risk management are addressed.

● Advise student-led Native American Heritage Month planning committee, providing guidance through leadership development, planning events, navigating campus policies, and reviewing budget and major purchases as needed.

Community Outreach & Research

· Creates a welcoming environment to unite students from diverse backgrounds.

· Support outreach to the Native American/American Indian/Indigenous/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian communities (undergraduate and graduate).

· Work with undergraduate admissions and first year students specifically in aiding the integration of Native American students into the larger community.

· Assess the need for a Native American Indigenous Studies program or other academic programming for Duke University.

· Develop relationships and partnerships with local Native communities and programs.

· Keeps abreast of changing and evolving trends regarding Native American/Indigenous, communities, identity, social justice education, and student development theories.

· Apply current research, literature and assessment outcomes to support student success services.

Additional Information:

· The Graduate Assistantship is a 10-14 hour per week position.

· Pay is commensurate with experience.

· Some evenings and weekend availability required.

· Supervised by Latinx Student Development Coordinator.

· Must be available to work Powwow April 11th, 2020

· Anticipated start late January or early February 2020.
