I invite you to attend the 2019 Provost Forum, “Immigration in a Divided World” to be held October 16 & 17.

This year’s Forum focuses on areas of tension within and between nations over issues of immigration. Participants will encounter diverse perspectives on the relative importance of sovereignty and humanitarianism, as well as how they intersect with cultural, ethnic, political, and economic issues.
Over the course of the two-day event, we will hold sessions exploring topics such as “Options for a Divided World: Immigration Between Nationalism and Humanitarianism,” “Immigrants and Refugees in the US and Europe,” and “Immigration and The University.” Sessions will be moderated by Duke faculty Suzanne Shanahan, Deondra Rose, and Kerry Abrams.
New York Times columnist and author Nicholas Kristof will deliver the keynote address titled, “Immigration as a Test of Our Values”.
Panels representing different views, perspectives, and disciplines, and organized in consultation with Duke students, will include the following speakers:
- Michael Brendan Dougherty, National Review columnist and author
- Karin Fischer, Chronicle of Higher Education columnist
- Michael Hardt, Duke Professor of Literature
- Eric Kaufman, University of London Professor of Politics
- Ana Raquel Minian, Stanford University Professor of History
- Jóse Antonio Vargas, Pulitzer Prize winner and founder of Define America
- Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, Penn State Law Clinical Professor of Law
- Peter Wehner, author and Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center
Please note registration is required for all events, including the keynote address. Registration will open on September 16.
