Jennifer Tran

My name is Jennifer Tran, and I am looking forward to exploring the GLS program with everyone! I’m from Charlotte, North Carolina, and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill (do with this information as you will, Duke fans…) with my undergraduate degree in media and journalism and minor in anthropology. I entered Duke GLS seeking guidance on where I should take my academic career, and am excited to see where my courses lead me. I spend most of my time looking for good eats and sweet treats, along with watching after my extremely loud but endearing calico cat, Basil. I’ve watched the 2005 Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen eight days in a row before. I listen to a lot of Japanese Breakfast, Faye Webster, and Nujabes, and I expect I will continue to do so on my drives to campus. I’m excited to see what the next couple of years will bring all of us — there is so much to learn from others, and I am so, so grateful for that.

    Preferred Name: Jennifer

Please share the title of a book you’ve recently enjoyed and would recommend to your GLS colleagues. Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain (tip: listen to the audiobook to hear Bourdain’s voice!)

What movie or television show that you watched recently would you recommend to the rest of us? Haikyū!!

Coming to the Duke GLS program, I hope to experience and grow into a person I’m proud of.

We’re going to make a GLS 2024 playlist on Spotify. Please recommend a song to include that speaks to how YOU feel as you embark on this new learning journey. It could be something that you’re listening to a lot now or a longtime favorite that captures the moment for you.
