My name is Madelene Travis (she/her), and I’m excited to join the GLS program part-time while continuing my work at Duke University in the Bellwether Collaborative for Health Justice. Our team investigates how the criminal legal system intersects with health and works to inform policy change through community-engaged research. I earned my BA in Sociology from Colorado College and began a PhD in Sociology at UNC-Chapel Hill before shifting toward applied research. I’ve found deep fulfillment in work that bridges academic inquiry with real-world impact, especially in areas related to health inequality. Outside of work, I’m passionate about making things and being outdoors. I love sewing (both garments and quilts) and spend weekends hiking, backpacking, and rock climbing. This fall, I’m hoping to finally learn to knit. After time away from formal education, I’m looking forward to returning to the classroom, engaging with new ideas, and learning from the GLS community!
