Erika Jackson

My name is Erika and I am from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I received my B.A. in English with a minor in Creative Writing, from Wittenberg University in 2022. I was a peer-tutor at my school’s Writing Center during undergrad, and have a passion for reading and editing. I also completed a summer certificate course at the University of Denver’s Publishing Institute. Currently, I work at Duke University Press as an Editorial Assistant, which was what inspired me to apply to Duke and the GLS Master’s program! I’m especially excited to explore the intersections of Black studies, Queer theory, and Feminist theory through my classes, though I am still relatively new to these fields. As a Duke student, I’m looking forward to meeting new people, joining clubs, and transitioning back into school after my year-long gap. Outside of school, I prefer a hammock and a good fantasy book when it’s warm out. I am a pretty crafty person, which really just means I tend to hoard art supplies, with building book nooks as my most recent hobby. I am also currently trying to learn how to sew, after getting a sewing machine a few months ago. My favorite ice cream is cookies-and-cream and I love the beach whenever I get the chance to go. Mostly, I can’t wait to get started on the GLS program and my next few years here at Duke!

    Preferred Name: Erika

Please share the title of a book you’ve recently enjoyed and would recommend to your GLS colleagues. In the Wake: On Blackness and Being by Christina Sharpe

What movie or television show that you watched recently would you recommend to the rest of us? Milo Murphy’s Law (Phineas and Ferb spin off)

Coming to the Duke GLS program, I hope to meet new people and explore subjects at the intersections of Black, Queer, and Feminist Studies

We’re going to make a GLS 2024 playlist on Spotify. Please recommend a song to include that speaks to how YOU feel as you embark on this new learning journey. It could be something that you’re listening to a lot now or a longtime favorite that captures the moment for you.
