Luke Drain

I was born in Baltimore, MD, in 1983. I attended Temple University, in Philadelphia, before joining the U.S. Army in 2004. I retired from the Army in March, 2024. My wife, two children, and I live in Fayetteville, NC, where we were stationed when I retired. My plan is to do nothing for a little while. I’ll be attending Duke full time, which I’m attending to pursue personal academic interests. I enjoy reading, baseball (watching, not playing – I have several injuries that prevent me from playing), and hiking. When I was stationed in Hawaii for three years, my wife and I categorized people into two types: mountain people and beach people. I’m a mountain guy. As seems to be the case with many GLS students, I’m leaving my previous career behind and embarking on a new adventure.

    Preferred Name: Luke

Please share the title of a book you’ve recently enjoyed and would recommend to your GLS colleagues. The Iliad: A Graphic Novel by Homer; adaptation by Gareth Hinds

What movie or television show that you watched recently would you recommend to the rest of us? TURN: Washington’s Spies

Coming to the Duke GLS program, I hope to enjoy myself

We’re going to make a GLS 2024 playlist on Spotify. Please recommend a song to include that speaks to how YOU feel as you embark on this new learning journey. It could be something that you’re listening to a lot now or a longtime favorite that captures the moment for you.
