Duke Global Surgical Equity Pathway
The Duke Global Surgical Equity Pathway for General Surgery Residents develops academic leaders who work to reduce human suffering caused by surgical disparities. The program focuses on improving surgical outcomes and access to care in low- and middle-income countries and specific regions of North Carolina. Administered by the Department of Surgery, Duke Center for Global Surgery, the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health, and the Duke Global Health Institute, this pathway delivers didactic and practical training leading to a Master’s of Science in Global Health, clinical experiences in rural North Carolina and global settings, and mentored research opportunities for surgical residents desiring a career focused on global surgery and health equity. The semester-long graduate seminar is led by Duke Surgery and the Duke Global Health Institute in collaboration with the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda. This course addresses the social, policy, economic, and clinical issues surrounding the delivery of surgical care in low- and middle-income countries. The seminar is designed for undergraduates, graduate students from various schools, and clinical trainees. Content focuses on surgical delivery, workforce, training, education, and economics. Emphasis on learning methods to conduct global surgery research. The format includes lectures, selected readings, interactive discussions, and team-based student presentations. Since 2010, Duke Anesthesiology has been committed to taking its residents outside the walls of Duke University Hospital and into underprivileged countries to make a difference in the lives of others. This department offers one CA-3 resident an American Board of Anesthesiology accredited, month-long global health residency rotation each year – a unique opportunity for residents to expand their knowledge and improve the quality of anesthetic care of patients abroad while working alongside an attending physician from Duke at Ridge Hospital in Ghana. The goal of this intensive 3-4 week fellowship is designed to train clinicians from low- and middle-income countries in patient safety and quality improvement (QI). This fellowship includes (1) didactic training in patient safety and QI, (2) experiential training in patient safety operations, and (3) mentorship of fellows in their home institution as they lead local safety and QI programs. Provides solid foundation in global perspectives on maternal and child health research, practice, and policy. Utilize case analysis to examine critical health challenges facing women, children, providers, and policymakers in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.
