As the global nutrition community shifts to the community therapeutic care model for the treatment of children with severe acute malnutrition, demand for ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) is rapidly increasing.
UNICEF is the leading global procurer of RUTF products, and commissioned a study to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of its supply chain for RUTF. Although the focus of this research was on eastern Africa, many of the methods and approaches are relevant for RUTF supply chains elsewhere in the world, and possibly for analysis of other products.
As part of this UNICEF project, the GHTA program and its partners conducted a supply chain analysis of RUTF for the Horn of Africa. We also provided a website that describes the process of supply chain analysis, with accompanying discussion of strategic issues and relevant examples from the RUTF supply chain project. The site can be navigated by using the left-hand menu to get guidance on the process steps for a supply chain analysis project, and viewing RUTF project-specific examples along the top menu.
