Faculty Policy Review

Parental Leave Policy: OFA led a comprehensive review of the existing faculty parental leave policy. Following the review, a recommendation was presented to Duke leadership and approved by the Provost. The updated parental leave policy enables both partners to qualify for parental leave as long as they are both employed at Duke.

Consensual Relationship Policy (Faculty Handbook Appendix Z): Academic Council revised this policy during 2017-2018, and several challenges have arisen from the implementation of this policy. OFA is  reviewing the policy and considering revisions.

Response to COVID-19

OFA created a set of resources to assist faculty with navigating professional and personal challenges presented by the pandemic, while continuing to support students, staff and each other. A special Faculty Advancement and Success (FAS) workshop assisted faculty with their roles as scholars and mentors as the crisis unfolded, and OFA hosted conversations with Duke faculty specialists to promote well-being.

Anti-Racism Resources

Since its launch in 2017, OFA has made diversity, equity and inclusion the core values that drive its mission for the success of all faculty. Our approach to faculty advancement is inspired by the conviction that those values should guide our entire portfolio and serve all faculty equally. This year we formalized this conviction by creating an anti-racism plan and set of resources for faculty.

OFA Newsletter

In March 2020, OFA launched an email newsletter highlighting our programs and initiatives, and referencing university-wide opportunities for faculty. The newsletter was sent bimonthly to 5,767 faculty throughout the year.

OFA News

Starting in March 2020, OFA initiated a new website section featuring news on the impact of the programs provided by our office. Seven articles were published in this academic year.

OFA Office Hours

In order to provide increased accessibility to the expertise of the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement, the Associate Vice Provosts for Faculty Advancement and other university leadership, Office Hours are offered to individuals or groups, including one-on-one meetings about specific needs or discussions led by campus leaders. OFA hosted four Office Hours in 2020-2021.

OFA Website

The OFA website undergoes regular review. This year the site was reorganized and expanded to include COVID-19 resources, anti-racism plans and resources, news articles and video resources.

National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD)

Duke has an institutional membership in NCFDD, which provides individual faculty members free access to advice in four key areas to help achieve extraordinary writing and research productivity while maintaining a full and healthy life off campus. Faculty members are encouraged to make use of the institutional membership by accessing the mentoring opportunities and faculty development resources.

The Faculty Success Program (FSP) is designed for faculty who would like to improve their research productivity and time management. OFA provides schools with matching funds for faculty participation. Since the launch of FSP at Duke in 2017, a total of 69 faculty have received support from OFA and graduated from the program.
