We would like to make it clear that we understand why the pay-to-play model has been maintained for so long. These reasons include:
- The costs of running travel club and academy programs – which include fields, coaches, referees and equipment – is high so the costs to the players’ families must be high as well.
- Most respected and organized club teams have scholarship programs for players to make admission more affordable.
- Lowering the costs of organized youth soccer does not directly mean more kids will want to play.
However, we do think there is room for improvement and would love to hear your thoughts on how to change the structure of youth soccer in the United States. Please feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments below.
