Remote – Nature’s Fynd – Extern

My name is Erin Roth and I work on the finance team at Nature’s Fynd – we’re an alternative protein company based out of Chicago that’s developed a novel fermentation technology to grow protein from a microbe originally discovered in Yellowstone. We opened our production facility earlier this year, which we announced when we closed our $80M Series B with Generation Investment Management, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and several others.

I lead our economics work and am currently recruiting for an extern to join our team this fall/winter.  Please reach out to eroth@naturesfynd.com if you are interested!

Nature’s Fynd is a groundbreaking food tech company born out of NASA-supported research on extremophiles in the geothermal pools of Yellowstone National Park. Our novel fermentation technology produces a sustainable source of complete protein using only a fraction of the resources required by traditional agriculture. As the challenge to feed the world’s expanding population grows, our mission is to create amazing foods that both nourish people and nurture the planet.

We’re looking for passionate, driven, and ambitious people to join our fast-growing team.
The Economics Extern will play a critical role in developing economic models to guide the commercialization of our novel fermentation technology. We are looking for someone who is both passionate about sustainability and biotechnology and looking to accelerate their professional development. The role is based in Chicago (with flexibility for remote work environment) with flexible start dates in ~September 2020 and will last ~3-6 months. Compensation will be in line with industry standards.

What you will do:

    • Conduct economic modeling to guide long-term commercialization strategies
    • Collaborate across the organization, working closely with manufacturing and R&D to guide scale-up decisions
    • Build relationships with critical third-party partners to support efforts

Your Profile:

      • Highly Analytical and Organized:  you can quickly drive to insights, finding scrappy ways to solve complex problems, while maintaining attention to detail and organization
      • Strategic Thinking and Intellectual Rigor:  you can balance thorough analysis with high-level strategic thinking to focus on what matters most
      • Comfort with Ambiguity: you are comfortable with taking nebulous concepts with limited direction and translating them into concrete insights and actions
      • Kind, Optimistic, and Fun: you enjoy collaborating on challenging problems and investing in the success of those around you

Preferred Qualifications:

    • 1-3 years of experience in financial modeling & analysis
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Experience with biotechnology, manufacturing, or supply chain analytics a plus

Durham – Durham Delivers – Coordinator

The American Underground and Discover Durham collaborated with local restaurants to launch a site that allows local residents to order from local establishments and receive their food at a convenient, nearby drop-off point. This is important as it cuts out the Grubhub type apps that are charging 30% for their delivery service and eliminating small business profit/break-even.

Durham Delivers (DurhamDelivers.org) is a clean, one-page site focused on driving support of Durham restaurants and building community among residents. The site showcases restaurants offering one-stop delivery to neighborhood parks/common areas on a rotating basis every Friday and Saturday. Residents can visit the site, see which restaurants are delivering to their neighborhood park and when, and click away from the page directly to the restaurant of their choosing. When the food is delivered, residents can enjoy eating together or taking the food home. And know they’re supporting local restaurants.

There is no fee for the delivery and restaurants are able to keep more of their margins by not using other delivery apps. Discover Durham and other partners will lead the marketing and promotion of this and will rely on neighborhood listservs to drive interest in the service.

It’s roughly 8-10hrs/week max and focused on marketing the program to area residents, collaborating with participating residents to ensure logistics and operations are smooth, and expanding the program beyond the initial pilot of 8 restaurants.

Unfortunately, because this is all volunteer driven, we do not have funding for this–all resources are going to the restaurants to keep them alive right now.
