Research was conducted in the Ethiopian Rift Valley, south of the capital Addis Ababa.
Villages were located amidst a chain of lakes, rivers, and wetlands and nestled between dormant volcanoes and mountains.
Some villages were easier to locate and reach than others, depending on road conditions (or even road existence). Locals were asked a long the way for directions and a guide sometimes scoped out ahead to see if the road continued or gave way to a massive tear in the earth. Only once did we have to ditch the cars to walk the final half mile into the village.
