Introduction

About Me

Welcome to my Grand Challenge Scholars E-portfolio! My name is Emilia Chojkiewicz, and I am a senior in the Class of 2019 from Cary, North Carolina. I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Energy Engineering. I am working on the challenge of “Restoring and Improving Urban Infrastructure” with my advisor, Dr. David Schaad.

Why am I a Grand Challenge Scholar?

Presently, most of the “developed” world enjoys a high standard of living: we have indoor plumbing, sanitation & waste services, asphalt roads, a supermarket on every corner, access to vaccines and medical care, electricity at the flip of a switch, and so on. As the global population grows, the demand for such luxuries will only increase, in turn necessitating a larger and faster distribution network. However, at the present state, our infrastructure – from the electric grid to telecommunications to water and sanitation, both domestically and internationally – is, simply put, inadequate.

Therefore, I am a GCS Scholar to both repair the current built environment and develop sustainable solutions for the future. I am particularly interested in infrastructure through the lens of renewable energy and clean water – as exemplified by my activities at Duke – which are showcased in this E-portfolio.

Enjoy, and if you would like to contact me, send an email to enc15@duke.edu!
