Welcome! This workshop on environmental justice, farmworker protection from pesticides, and service learning is hosted by the Research Translation Core of Duke University’s Superfund Research Program in conjunction with the Nicholas School of the Environment and Johnson C. Smith University. We will convene in Durham, NC, June 15 to 19, 2012, bringing together faculty and undergraduates from Johnson C. Smith University, Mecklenburg County high school teachers, and community leaders from Charlotte, NC.
We have intertwining goals for this 5-day workshop. We hope that
1. our participants and organizers will enhance their knowledge of struggles for environmental justice within North Carolina;
2. by the end of the summer of 2012, our participants will develop a service-learning curriculum about environmental justice, for K-12 or college students, that is locally relevant and that is based on research emerging from the Duke Superfund Research Program;
3. undergraduate students from JCSU interested in environmental health and toxicology will extend their experiences in these topics; and
4. the workshop will continue or initiate collaborative relationships among community members interested in issues of hazardous chemicals and programs at Duke and JCSU.
