Zachary BerensZachary Berens

  • Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Majors: Mathematics, Computer Science
  • Zach is double majoring in math and computer science and would like to pursue a PhD in mathematics. He is currently doing a math independent study on affinoid spaces with Professor Joe Rabinoff, whose research focuses on number theory and algebraic geometry. Zach has tentative plans to do research through Duke math department’s PRUV fellowship in summer 2023.

 

Idiris Egal Idiris Egal

  • Hometown: Dorchester, Massachusetts
  • Major: Political Science (Field of Study: Security, Peace, and Conflict)
  • Idiris plans to declare a major in political science and to pursue the Human Rights Certificate. He is a member of the Student Advisory Board of the Human Rights Center and is a writer for Juris, Duke’s undergraduate law magazine. In summer 2022, Idiris served in the office of Massachusetts State Senator Ed Markey in Washington, D.C. as part of the Judiciary Pod focusing on domestic policy issues. In spring 2023, Idiris is serving as a house course instructor with Bull City Scholars DPS Middle School Outreach, which focuses on the history of education inequity in Durham middle schools.

 

Bianca Ingram

  • Hometown: Palm Bay, Florida
  • Major: Sociology
  • Bianca plans to declare a major in sociology to address her wide range of academic interests related to business, policy, and inequality. She is a Senator on the Campus Life Committee for Duke Student Government and serves on the President’s Council on Black Affairs at Duke and the QuadEx Class of 2025 Advisory Council. She is also involved with the Duke International Relations Association and the Duke Association for Business Oriented Women. In spring 2023, Bianca is a house course instructor with Bull City Scholars DPS Middle School Outreach, which addresses on the underpinnings of structural inequity in American education with a focus on middle school children.

 

Zeinab Mukhtar Zeinab Mukhtar

  • Hometown: Arlington, Virginia
  • Major: Public Policy
  • Minor: Environmental Science and Policy
  • Zeinab was raised in a multicultural family outside Washington, D.C. and has Moroccan and Sudanese roots. She is passionate about global development and the intersection of human rights, the environment, and data. At Duke, Zeinab is a Baldwin Scholar, president of the Muslim Students Association, and has served on the national championship Arabic debate team. She is interested in finding effective strategies for sustainable development in her home country and hopes to use her research as a chance to explore this.

 

Kulsoom Rizavi Kulsoom Rizavi

  • Hometown: Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India
  • Majors: Computer Science and Political Science (Concentration: Decision Theory & Data Science)
  • Certificate: Documentary Studies
  • Kulsoom Rizavi is an international student from India studying Political Science, Computer Science and Visual Media. She is interested in utilizing her background in multimedia production and data analytics to tell impact-driven stories. At Duke, she works as a photojournalist for the Ninth Street Journal, creates films with Freewater Productions, creates her own documentary work (winning the 2021 Koonz Human Rights Prize), has been involved with the Duke Student Government and is a member of the International Student Advisory Board. She is also a self-proclaimed hodophile and has travelled to Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Iceland, and Los Angeles as part of her academic journey. Kulsoom was recently featured in Duke Today for her Summer 2023 project in Iceland.
