Check the spreadsheet to see the name of your host teacher and their email address. Contact them to know that you are a Duke student with PfS, and the day/time you will be volunteering. Check in about their expectations. Ask a little about the class and about what you’ll be doing.
Complete the form here. This is a Student U form and is sent to all of their tutors. Some of the questions related to timing may seem redundant. Please just complete the form with information about your confirmed placement.
Transportation: This site is accessible by several public buses – #11, #5, and #12. There may be a possibility of a Duke van, or consider signing up for STRNC.org for facilitated carpooling. Sign up with your Duke address to get additional tools. Let us know if you need any help with figuring things out.
Description
Student U is a community organization that uses the power of education to build a just and equitable Durham. Student U is located in the W.G Pearson building which was formally an elementary school. Their mission is to empower and equip first generation college students in Durham Public Schools, their families, and educators to become the leaders that will transform our city.
How to Check In
Go to the front door and press the call bell. Once you are let in, sign in on the iPad in the front office and pick up your landyards (at the front office). Head to the 3rd floor if you are working with the middle school program. Stay on the 1st floor if you are working with the high school program.
Possible Activities
Working with the YRP(year round program) to provide general subject tutoring to middle school students.Supervising students in the YRP program during the recess/wellness time.Mentoring/tutoring students in the high school program.
