During fall semester of my junior year, a bunch of people from my class studied abroad (myself included). When I returned,  I was really worried about adjusting back to life at Duke.  Then, the eve of the first day of classes for Spring semester, all of us who had been abroad got together with other PCM folks.  We ate and laughed far into the night.  In that  moment, I realized how much these people meant to me and how much I’d missed them.  It immediately eased all of my anxieties. It was a breath of fresh air to start the semester off right!
If I could be a Biblical character…
Deborah
Favorite Scripture Verse:
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” -John 14:27
Final thoughts:
I could say a million things about my love for PCM. But I think this video (made my first year) says it FAR better than I ever could: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcPtmlKK-68

Getting stuck in the stairwell during the sunrise chapel climb after the lock-in last spring.
If I could be a Biblical character…
I would be Moses. He can accomplish more than he ever dreamed of with God by his side.
Favorite Scripture Verse:
“Be still and know that I am God.” -Psalm 46:10
Final thoughts:
I can’t express how much PCM means to me.  I can’t imagine my Duke experience without PCM, as it has given me friends for life and a spiritual stronghold no matter where my faith journey may take me.

Going on a fall retreat to Montreat and being stuck inside the whole time because it rained all weekend, but having some amazing chances to talk about life while just watching the rain from the porch.
If I could be a Biblical character…
Thomas (there’s so much more than the ‘doubting Thomas’ story!)
Favorite Scripture Verse:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord.  “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” -Jeremiah 29:11
Final thoughts:
PCM makes me laugh until my stomach hurts, it makes think about the issues of the world that might otherwise pass me by, and it challenges me each and every day to be a better person— but most of all, PCM is my family at Duke, and I couldn’t imagine life without it.

Favorite PCM+ memory:
While my mind jumps first to hilarious hijinks like gift wrapping Katie “The Rev” Aumann’s entire office for April Fools’ Day, one of my favorite memories is from the lock-in in the Chapel. We sang together by candle light for midnight vespers, taking a moment to contemplate the sacredness of the Chapel and our relationships with one another and God. The next morning, we trudged up to the top of the Chapel tower to watch the sunrise in the frigid cold! Being in the sanctuary at midnight and on the tower at dawn gave me a perspective of Duke not many other students see.
Biblical Character:
Even though the Good Samaritan isn’t actually a real person, I’d like to be like him/her. I find it so easy to get caught up in my own problems at school and completely ignoring the needs of those around me. It’s an ideal I strive for, though fail at constantly.
Favorite Scripture Verse:
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” -John 13:34
Final thoughts:
PCM is my family at Duke! We’ve got home-cooked meals, secret stashes of chocolate, and unwavering support all hours of the day. The best part of my day is walking into the Chapel Basement after class and seeing a herd of smiling PCM-ers who are terribly eager to distract me from all that important homework. Also, did I mention the chocolate? I’m totally looking forward to welcoming the Class of 2019 into the fold!

The fall retreat at Montreat! I loved getting a chance to leave campus for a refreshing weekend in the mountains and spend time with everyone in PCM. The fall retreat is one of the highlights of my fall semester every year!!
If I could be a Biblical character
Moses because he is a great leader in the bible. Despite his feelings of inadequacy and doubt, God gave him the confidence, encouragement and bravery to act out God’s will. Many of these qualities are relatable and Moses is a perfect example of how God often uses those who feel inadequate and weak.
Favorite Scripture Verse:
“If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.” – 1 Corinthians 3: 18-19
Final thoughts:
When I was a freshman, I was unsure of whether I would be able to find a faith community at Duke to be a part and I had no idea I would find one as accepting and loving as PCM. PCM offers the spiritual guidance and support that helps ground me in college in addition to an unbelievably kind and caring community of friends. I can’t wait for all the new faces to join us this year and for another incredible school year together!

Sunrise climb of Duke Chapel!
If I could be a Biblical character…
I’ve always admired John the Baptist’s humility and deference to someone whose sandals he was “not worthy to carry,” despite all of his own brilliance.
Favorite Scripture Verse:
“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor power, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” -Romans 8:38-39
Final thoughts:
PCM+ is a group rooted in faith and a group bound by love for one another, but most of all it’s a group with arms open wide. Come join us!

Easter brunch at Katie’s house!  Easter is always an incredibly meaningful and traditional-filled day for my family.  Since this was the first year I couldn’t be at home to celebrate, it was so wonderful to spend the afternoon sharing a meal with my extended PCM family!
If I could be a Biblical character…Peter
Favorite Scripture Verse: “He has made everything beautiful in its time.  He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet, no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” -Ecclesiastes 3:11 (Tricky to choose a favorite, though!)
Final thoughts: PCM has been an absolutely integral part of college for me.  I can’t imagine my freshman year without our Sunday night dinners, meaningful talks, and continual stream of entertaining group texts.  This group has challenged me spiritually and encouraged me continually, and I can’t wait to welcome incoming freshman with the same open-armed enthusiasm that the upperclassmen extended to me!

Our fall trip to Montreat in the fall because I consider that place like a second home and it was really beautiful being able to share that with my PCM family.
If I could be a Biblical character…
David. I relate to his struggles and his shortcomings but I can really connect with his ability to always come back to his faith eventually.
Favorite Scripture Verse:
“And even though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death I shall fear no evil for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4
Final thoughts:
PCM is an incredible place. Even after one short year, I’ve been a been able to find a group of people who truly care about me and will always strive to help me on my faith journey.

Favorite memory of PCM+:
The first retreat I went on. We sang and played guitar and talked about “joy” and enjoyed the rainiest weekend in the mountains! It was right when midterms and the stress of college was starting to boil up and it was the perfect break I needed in my busy school schedule..
If I could be a Biblical character…
Peter. Peter in the bible is not perfect, but he is one of the first disciples and the one who most loudly proclaims that Jesus is the son of God. Peter finds courage in Jesus and the fisherman from Galilee becomes an unlikely hero and a cornerstone in the foundation of the church. And while this isn’t something to emulate, he denies Jesus three times. The amazing part? Jesus still forgives him and chooses him to hear the Good News. If I were a biblical character I would want to be a courageous, unlikely hero like Peter who experienced God’s grace first hand.
Favorite Scripture Verse:
“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or the clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith that can move mountains, but of not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” -1 Corinthians 13:1-3
Final thoughts…  When I came to Duke it was hard for me to find a religious life group that felt like home to me. I’ll let you in on a secret: I’m not Presbyterian, but Duke PCM+ has been everything I was looking for and more. These people make me laugh, are there for me when I cry and helped remind me how much I loved having God in my life. I’m so blessed to call this organization one of my homes at Duke!

Favorite memory of PCM+:Hard to choose, but I loved the scavenger hunt during our lock-in! Perhaps because it involved my first Loop milkshake and a vampire bat onesie…
If I could be a Biblical character…I would be Esther: brave, powerful, creative, and loyal to her friends and family.
Favorite Scripture Verse:“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” -1 Corinthians 13:1
Final thoughts…  So excited to be a part of PCM+ this year as we foster a supportive community on campus centered around Christ and fellowship!
