2017-2018 Duke PCM+ Campus Ministry Internship

Statement of Purpose

A campus ministry internship with Duke PCM+ is an opportunity for spiritual and vocational formation by serving God and students on Duke’s campus. Campus ministry interns will have the opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ in times of connection, reflection, worship and service with Duke students.

Duke PCM seeks an intern to participate in the leadership of formal campus ministry programming and service events with undergraduate students at Duke.  This individual should provide a welcoming presence for the ministry, aid students in exploration of questions that deepen and engage their faith, and invite students into Christian community on and off campus through ministry activities.

Basic Internship Expectations (based on learning-serving covenant)

Specific areas of involvement in the ministry will be determined through the development of a learning-serving covenant with the campus minister/supervisor.  These areas may include but are not limited to:

  • Connection
    • Evangelism and student outreach to potential students, especially during fall student orientation
    • Building relationships with students that help them discern ways to connect faith and life, heart and mind
    • Regular table fellowship with students on campus, including 2-3 hour “office hours” weekly on the Bryan Center plaza
    • Attendance and leadership in fall/spring retreats, as able
  • Reflection
    • Leading a weekly Bible study on east or west campus
    • One-on-one discipleship with students, including regular gatherings with individuals or small groups for conversation around theological questions, relationship-building and prayer
  • Worship
    • Regular worship leadership on Sunday evenings
    • Attendance at local Presbyterian/UCC churches on designated “campus ministry” Sundays
  • Service
    • Participation in mission/outreach events in Durham, as selected by student L-team
  • Other
    • Attendance at one board meeting per semester (usually 2nd Tuesday @ 5:30pm) Assistance with some office tasks, including weekly worship bulletins and/or weekly e-newsletter 

Qualifications

  • College graduate with Bachelor’s degree
  • Current seminary student (preference given to Duke Divinity School MDiv students) or individual discerning a call to ministry
  • Preference given to students seeking ordination or formal service in the PC(USA) or UCC
  • Discerning particular calling to ministry with young adults
  • Willingness to share the gospel in a non-traditional ministry setting

Expectations of Time and Presence

  • 10-12 hours per week during Fall/Spring Semesters for a total of 300 hours
  • Regular participation in ministry activities, including Sunday night PCM dinner & worship, retreats, and other events as planned by CM/Intern/Student Leadership Team
  • Weekly meeting with supervisor
  • Check-ins with “intern supervising committee” (two members of board and one student) for support, prayer, and feedback at least once per semester 

Stipend

  • $5000 stipend split equally over fall and spring semesters
  • Additional funding may be available via discussion with supervisor and divinity school, especially if denominational placement is required by ordaining body
